Back in the summer of 1998, I drove across the country, starting in New York City and arriving in Salt Lake. This photograph was taken on that trip, near the Texas/New Mexico border. My friend Brooke was moving from NYC to LA and asked me to come along for the ride.
Today it’s raining in Provo (I heard there’s snow in the mountains) and outside it looks a little bit like it does in this picture from 11 years ago.
Goodbye, summer. I’m going to miss you.

In about three weeks I’m going to drive up to Rexburg Idaho and speak at BYU-Idaho. It’s for their Art Seminar series. Each semester, BYU Idaho invites artists from a variety of disciplines to speak about their work. From their site: “The course is designed to expose Art majors to a variety of contemporary artists, designers, and photographers.” The part about photographers–that’s where I come in. I’m really looking forward to it.
If you find yourself in Rexburg, Idaho on October 22nd, I hope to see you there.
Elizabeth’s mother came to Provo on account of Elizabeth’s wedding at Sundance. They came to the studio a few days before to be photographed together. So glad they came.

Rodney Smith is one of my favorite photographers. Here’s a recent quote from his blog:
To say a photographer has a vision is to say the photographer has something unique to say to about the world. Why do some photographers have something unique to say, when so many others just shoot pictures that are general and lacking vision? Most people would say it has to do with talent. Maybe. But maybe not. Maybe it has nothing to do with talent. Maybe it has to do with the ability to express one’s feelings. The person who presents a strong vision has figured out a way to express his or her feelings, while others are struggling to do that. Talent, then, becomes not so much artistic talent, though that may be a good part of it, but rather emotional talent.

…..
Justin Hackworth photographs happy families, beautiful events, and he wants to photograph you. And now, this time of year, is such a great time for such things. The colors in Provo canyon are already changing. They won’t stay like that forever. We should talk.

My goal for a portrait is to give the viewer a sense of what the subject is like. Not just what they look like, but what they’re like to be around. I love to hear a parent say, “Oh, you’ve captured their personality perfectly”. Making a picture like that takes a certain amount of patience and paying attention to the details. A slight change in expression, a little hand gesture. Then, right at the perfect moment, click. So I had a great time with Jenny and her kids, all of them pleasant as can be. Thanks for coming in, Jenny.

Want photographs like this for you and the people you love? We should talk.

Are you like me? Do you look at these pictures and think, “Well now, I’d sure like to be friends with those people”. And if you are friends with them, consider yourself blessed because, as I’ve come to discover, these here are two very charming ladies.
I love my job.

Ashlee came to our 30 Strangers exhibit in July and liked what she saw. She decided she wanted to get her whole family together for the kind of family picture she couldn’t get anywhere else. I photographed the whole family in downtown Provo, just a couple blocks from my studio. We stopped traffic. That’s not hyperbole. I mean traffic actually stopped, because I was in the middle of the road to take that top picture.

Photographed in Rexburg Idaho.
I photographed Sarah and Tim last December in Provo, Utah, and think they are great fun to be around. So I was pleased as punch to take pictures of their entire family last month when they all came to town.

Here’s what Sarah had to say:
Sooo worth the investment! We love our photos, Justin! Can’t wait to frame them.
