I do have some tips. People look more relaxed when they feel relaxed. If you're photographing people in a crowd at a reception or some such event, just go about your picture taking without them seeing you. Or, if they turn and look and give a corny smile, kindly say, "Oh, that's ok. Just keep doing what you were doing" or some thing like that. One thing I do a lot when doing a portrait of someone is to ask them questions. They can't think about the answer and talk about it at the same time they are faking a smile. So, at the end of their sentence, that's a good time to take a picture. (That takes practice). Another thing about doing a portrait is that I keep the directions to a minimum or none at all. That's for two reasons. First, I want them standing they way they normally would. Looks more authentic in the final image. Really captured the cozyness of the wedding. They capture real human quality because they don't look "posed for."
