Here we go! Announcing year three of the 30 Strangers Portrait Project and fund raiser. Once again, we’ll be doing portraits of mothers and daughters and collecting donations to the Center for Women and Children in Crisis.
Last year, it was first come, first served. This year, all you need to do is leave a comment on this blog post and we’ll be selecting people at random. You have until March 5, 2010, at midnight. If you are selected you must respond to my email within two days.
Please, please, read the following info before you leave a comment. We want to make sure you have all the details (which is to say, we want to make sure you know the parameters of the project) and that you have all the info you’ll need. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.
What is 30 Strangers?
A Justin Hackworth Photography project. It works like this. For the entire month of April 2010 I will make a portrait of a mother and daughter every day. 30 portraits – 30 days.
Pick me! Pick me! Pick me! How do I get picked?
Hold on, tiger. I’d love to pick you so please leave a comment on this blog post and we’ll randomly select you. Keep in mind, there are some guidelines. Please read carefully.
It’s not called 30 Strangers for nothing. To participate, you and I must have never met.
Also, we’re looking for people that are age 6 to 108. Why not under the age of 6? Too fidgety. Why not over 108? There are some stairs to my office.
When you leave a comment on the blog, be sure to include your email address. Don’t worry. Your email won’t show up for all to see, but I’ll be able to see it and get a hold of you if (when!) you are selected. All portrait sessions will take place at 4:00pm each day. Remember, this is for April 2010. When you arrive, I’ll ask that you sign a model release (pretty standard stuff). In your blog comment, if you’d like to mention 3 days that will work best for you, that will really help me out.
Although we’ll be strangers when I photograph you, I certainly hope we don’t remain that way. Part of what makes this project great is the people I get to know.
Now, those are the essential details so feel free to post your comment. And if you’re dying to know more, keep reading.
What do I get out of it?
I’m glad you asked. You’ll be part of this historic project and donating to a good cause. You’ll experience an artistic, professional portrait session with the most important people in your life. I’ll create something personal and unique that will become more important to you over time.
Each session will receive one signed 8×10 fine art print and further prints will be available for purchase.
What’s this about donations to a worthy cause?
Great question. The thing you should know about the 30 Strangers project is that the $250 session fee is waived. Instead, we’ll be collecting a $45 donation per session for the Center for Women and Children in Crisis, in Provo.
Can I see what you’ve done in the past?
Go here to see portraits from 30 Strangers 2009, and here for 30 Strangers 2008. And here’s where you can see more of my portrait work.
What type of person are you looking for?
A mother and daughter combination. What would be even better than that would be a grandmother, mother and daughter. What would be even better than that would be a great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, daughter. What would be even better than that would be any of those groups I just mentioned, but when they came to the studio, they brought me a pie or a Henry Wienhard’s vanilla creme soda.
I’m going to take my time and think about whether or not I want to participate.
Well, that’s up to you, but last year I filled all 30 spots in under 2 hours. This year, you have until March 5 at midnight to leave a comment on the blog. Participants will be randomly selected from those that leave a comment.
Where will the photographs be taken?
My studio in Provo, Utah.
Can I include more than one of my daughters?
You’re welcome to bring them and if there is time, we can photograph you all together. For this project, however, I am looking for one person from each generation. That is the focus of the project and I can’t guarantee that we’ll have time for anything beyond that. (But we’ll probably have time, and come on, what am I going to do, turn away your other two daughters? Look at them. All dressed up and that one is wearing make up. She never wears make up.)
How long do the portrait sessions last?
Usually about 1 hour. Sometimes less, sometimes a little more.
Why are you doing this?
There’s something about a project with structure and tight parameters that fuels the creation of an expressive body of work, in this case, exploring the relationship between mothers and daughters. I love being a portrait photographer. Making images that move people and offer a sense of the subject’s personality is deeply fulfilling.
I’m also looking forward to raising money and awareness for the Center for Women and Children in Crisis, an organization founded on protecting these vital relationships.
I can’t wait to see who walks through the door and the images we’ll make. This is my third year doing the 30 Strangers project and I have been looking forward to this ever since we finished last year’s project.
When can I see the photographs from my session?
In the studio, one to two weeks after your session. We’ll schedule an appointment and together we’ll view your images. Each session will recieve one signed 8×10 print and you’ll have the opportunity to purchase additional prints. I’ll also update the blog daily with favorites.
I wish you were doing a cool photography project related to weddings.
We are! It’s called Love’s First Year and you can read about it here.
I am extremely beautiful. Will you be intimidated by my good looks?
Probably not. I’m married to a very beautiful girl, so I’m used to being around lovely people.
Do you like cheese?
Well sure–who doesn’t, but what does that have to do with this project?
Do these pants make me look fat?
Are you kidding me? You look fabulous! I wish I had a picture of you.
Do you think it’s funny when a lot of clowns get out of a tiny car all at once?
Ok, enough with the questions. Just leave a comment on this blog post if you want to be a part of 30 Strangers.

This sounds awesome! I just came aross your blog and would love to participate in your project. It would be my mom (I have not asked her yet, but I am sure I can convince her to come), myself and my 6 year old daughter. What is your favorite kind of pie?
I would love to be a part of this!
I am the mother of 4 (two sets of twins) BUT only 1 of them is a girl and I think it would be so special to do this with her. Maybe I could convince my mom (who is also an only girl with three brothers) and HER mom (my grandmother, obviously) to come along??
Justin, i linked from Cjane…she is fabulous! And she says you are fabulous, so it must be so.
My mother died of cancer a few years ago, BUT! but, my sister has done a remarkable job of mothering me through some of the craziest patches of life…when I’ve needed a mother, through two pregnancies, and new jobs, and moving, my sister has been my mother, and for that I will forever be grateful.
Thanks for posting this contest! Such a divine cause.
My mother is 73, I am 49, and my daughter is 23. I like black and white photos, your personality is fun, and I like the creative and charitable nature of this project.
I think this would be a beautiful mother’s day treat for my mom! I’m in!
Justin,
It’s a good cause you chose. Thank you. We’re fans of the project from last year, and excited to be able to apply! I’m entering for my sister, my mom, and my grandma who will all be in Utah in April. My sister has 3 daughters under 3, (not old enough to participate) and she loves photography. My grandma has pulled away a little recently, and it would mean a lot to my mom to have a picture like this of them. Your pictures expose emotions below the surface, and I hope you pick us: my sister and I are 1/2 Peruvian.
For the past couple of years, I’ve really wanted to take part in this project, but I was living in Massachusetts. This year, I’ve moved back to Utah!! I would love the opportunity to have a portrait done with my daughter. I have four children…three sons, one daughter. She is my calm in the storm. I sure hope we’re chosen. (Fingers and toes crossed.) (Oh, and we’re pretty much available any time in April)
I live in So Cal and it’d be so nice to bring my mom to Utah and have this done. I am the only daughter out of five kids, so she and I, we’re it.
My mom and my daughter and I would love to have our pictures taken! Our family has had a hard month and I was even thinking last week how I would love to have a picture with my Mom because she is the most amazing woman that I have ever known! Please pick us! It would be such a blessing! We are available at any time although Mondays, Fridays and weekends would be ideal.
Thank you for doing this project again. It is amazing!
My mom and I are best friends. I am 24 and she is 46. I’m her only daughter, so she has no choice on who she takes her picture with!
Pick us, pretty please!
We will be visiting Provo for my little sister’s graduation at BYU from April 21st-24th. I live in FLORIDA and my mom lives in TEXAS. I am 28 and my mom is 52 [I also have a 2 year old daughter, but she is too young for your cutoff age]. My mother is Hispanic and my father is Scottish American. I love the way our features come out in black and white photos. I am amazed and often left a bit breathless as I see the life you capture in your work. I think that meeting you would be a spectacular way to celebrate with my mom. I would be honored to be a “stranger” no more.
The only drawback is that I can’t get to Utah!!! and I qualified with a grandmother, mom (me) and daughter….and would so LOVE for you to take our picture, because you are WONDERFUL…and I wouldn’t let you be a stranger after taking our photo, but alas….I am nowhere near Utah, although I would really like to be
Rats. I just met you at the Seth Godin event in SL. Will you have any future events for people you’ve only met once for 5 minutes? I love your projects.
Hello Justin,
I love your work, it is amazing how well you capture the bond of a mother and daughter. I would love to come with my mother, she’s 63 and I’m 26, I dont have kids so it would just be us 2. I’m in SLC shes in provo, so anytime would work, preferably saturdays because I dont work but I could get off early to come do this, I would LOVE that! Hopefully you pick us (fingers crossed) Thanks!
This sounds fantastic!!! I would love to do it with my mom…she would love it:) Any day but MOnday’s and Tuesdays. I HOPE HOPE WE GET PICKED!!!
As long as it’s Henry Weinhard’s I’ll definitely be bringing Vanilla Cream Soda–my personal fave.
My Grandma lives in Provo and my mom visits quite often and I would come visit to make this all happen–plus I’m pregnant–and we have an inkling it’s a girl. Great project and what a great cause! Would love to be part of it.
I would love this! My mom and I both live in Utah County. I have four daughters to throw into the mix. We would be thrilled for you to consider us!
I can offer you the great textured faces of myself, my daughter, and my four granddaughters!
i loved your project from last year!!! and i would love to volunteer myself (28) and my daughter (6) for this year! we live in farr west….just north of ogden. heck….i’d even love to volunteer my mom (53) and her mom (80) too!!! i know we’d all love to come down and help you and your great cause out.
I live on the East Coast, so the later the better for me to find a flight. I would love to have me, my mom and my daughter for the multi-generation shot. I also have 3 sisters that all have at least 1 daughter as well that might be willing participants (one lives here on the East near me and the other 2 are in the SLC area near my mom.) Unfortunately grandma passed away 4 years ago, but we are lucky that my mom is still here. She had a liver transplant a year and a half ago and has made a great recovery. What an awesome project, I’d love to help out and be a participant. My ‘random.org’ be my friend!
My first thought was, “I wish my mom were alive so I could try for this.” My second thought was, “Hey, I could try to do it with my daughter!” My third thought was, “Darn, she’s only five.”
But really, she’s a mature five! You’d swear she was six!
And even though I can’t have my mother join us for a three-generation thing, I could get my grandma there! Wouldn’t that work? Great-grandma, mother, daughter? Pick me. I’ll even leave the five-year-old home if I have to.
I don’t recall a lengthy comment as a requirement. I could possibly pull off a 4 generation but 3 for sure or just me and my beautiful daughter.
April 1-9th is good and then
April 24-30
I’m submitting my mom and sister to be a part of the project! I am currently in Cali and wouldn’t be able to be in town, but they are residents of good ‘ol grandview and would love to be a part of this!
I want to be a part of your awesome project!!! My mom and daughter and I would love to participate! Your work is amazing! I make a mean pie and would love to bring one to you. Any day during the last 3 weeks of April would work for us!
I would love to participate with my 16-month-old daughter, and possibly even my mother (she may be in town the first few days of the month). Our first choice would be April 1st-3rd (that’s when my mom may be in town). Otherwise, we are available anytime from the 5th-16th of April. Thanks for the opportunity!
Oh my goodness, please pick me! I live in Arizona along with my Mom (47) and my Grandma (70), and we are visiting Provo together April 16-18! Convenient, right?! My mom and my grandma are two of the most important people in my life, and I would absolutely love to share this experience with them. Please, please pick us! (also, I make a smashing apple pie, and I will be happy to bring you one!)
thank you for this opportunity! i have 2 beautiful daughters that i would love to have this opportunity with. my youngest children are boys and they seem to take up most of my time. something special with the girls would be amazing. as for the generations photo, my grandmother is in her 70′s, my mom is in her 50′s, i am 33 and my daughters are 7 and 10. we would love this opportunity and are available any time that you can offer us!
I’m a Utah native but am currently residing in Reno, NV. I love your work and think you have an ah-mazing eye behind the camera.
If I’m picked, any time after 4/15 would be great. (I’m a tax accountant.) My mom and I could use a little bonding time, but don’t tell her I said that.
How fun for this opportunity!! My mom and I share the same birthday!! If we get picked, I’ll bring a birthday cake for all the share!! And I have three beautiful daughters too if you want them to come! We’ll have a par-tay!! Anyday works except for sundays and wednesdays! {cheeeeese}
I want to make this simple. I have a 9 year old daughter and triplet 5 year old girls, well only 2 girls that are 5,the other triplet is a boy, which would make triplets. I always have them photographed, but never myself, so what a treat to have me and my girls together. Fridays and Saturdays work best then the hubby can be home with the boys.
Hello, random number generator!
Feel free to choose me and my assortment of mother-daughter people for Justin’s project. If you don’t choose me, that’s OK. Just make sure to choose 30 other people, or Justin will have to find a random number generator who is more reliable than you.
My 11-year-old daughter, my mom and I all live in Utah County.
We’re most likely to be available on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
I do not live in Utah. I live in Arizona. But I am a big fan. I am a daughter (one of 6 in fact). I have a daughter. Do I qualify? I will travel. I will pay. I will smile.
I love your work. I also love my mom. A good match? I think so.
I’m available more toward the end of April. Probably from the 20th on.
I’m usually the photographer, so I don’t get photographed much! This would be really cool to do.
OH! And maybe my grandma could come, too. I can guarantee you would absolutely love her.
Pick me pick me, My mother and I would love it and my 90 year old grandma is still so regal and beautiful. You could not handle it. We are all very photogenic. I do have a daughter but she is only 2 and I have 3 sisters that I bet I could get to come also. It would be absolutely fabulous.
Mother of 10, 8 girls, 21 years down to 8 years old, triplets included. 21 yr. old a BYU student, 19 yr. old a BYU student, TRIPLET 17 yr. olds, juniors in highschool, 15 yr. old freshman, 13 yr., old 8th grade and 8 yr old 3rd grade. Have a child in every other grade at school, kids in every school in the district. They are photogenic and we would love to do a mother/daughter”s” photo. Teachable, easy to work with, great eyes and smiles
It would be a clever picture! We are from Fruitland, Idaho…but can come down over a weekend (or we will be there March 18-April 1. (There are 2 boys and a dad in the family too) Please pick us!
I would love to do this with my mom. I know my mom would love this gift and she is a beauty! She lives in California, but I would love to fly her out to Utah for this opportunity. We’d be happy to bring some home cooked Chinese food for this event!
So you said you would like a great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, daughter photo…how about a great-great-grandmother, great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, daughter photo. I kid you not. Only issue..not too sure we could convince the great great to fly to Utah (she is up in New Jersey), but if you pick us we could fly your up instead!
I am the only daughter for my beautiful mother! I am 100% certain that we would be the perfect strangers for this project! I have the 3rd generation in my stomach right now, giving us that glow that just can’t be replicated!
We live in Utah county and would be available most days in April- We can work with your schedule! My mom just spent some time in Haiti helping the people there and this would be an awesome way for me to show my appreciation for what a great woman and mother she is! Cjane talks nothing but amazing things about you- it would be an honor to meet you!
Wow! I regularly visit your website and try to figure out when I can get our family out there (we live in Northern CA) to do a session with you. What an opportunity this would be. My Mom and I have an incredible relationship! I would of course love to include my 4 year daughter, but she can wait if need be (although I think you would like her a lot and so would your camera!). Truthfully the last weekend in April would be hard, but really this is once in a lifetime opportunity; so you tell us when to be there and we will make it happen!
I have a daughter, and we’ll be in the Provo area the 1st of April, I would love to do this. To bad you aren’t doing this in May, my mom gets home from Russia then, or else it could be a 3 generation picture.
Would love to capture any one of my three beautiful girls in this setting…available any day in April EXCEPT 14, 21. See you soon!
We are from Virginia. My mother & I (ok & her other daughters, but really who’s the important one here!?
) Will be in Provo, UT April 29-May1st. (We might also be there April 1-5th.)
THANKS!
This sounds fantastic! My mom actually lives back in PA (along with the rest of my family…that’s where I’m from), but she’ll be here end of April for my college graduation!! And her mother lives in SLC and could be at the shoot, too! How perfect would that all be! I’m not sure of the exact dates she would be here- sometime between the 21st and 24th probably- but if (when!) I get picked, I’ll let you know for sure!
I really thin that you should pick my mom! Any of us daughters would be happy to stand with her, but my two adorale sisters are in Provo going to school. And, if I can convince my husband I would come too.
Obviously this is a random choosing, but I really think you should pick my mom. She has five daughters (including me) and we are all best friends! We all live in Utah except my oldest sister who would make herself available ANY time for something like this. Basically, we would love to be chosen!
I would love to do this with my dear mother and grandmother! This is such a wonderful idea. April 21-24th sometime would probably be best. Thanks so much!
We live in Washington, but what a fun thing to travel for. We could be in Utah on April 1st,2nd,3rd (Spring Break). I hope we get chosen. I haven’t won anything in a long time. Can you make my face look thin?
What an incredibly awesome project and for a good cause, too! It would be a treat to have my mom, my daughter and I photographed. Pick us! Pretty please with sugar on top! Available April 16, 17, 21. Really, any day after April 9th.
