The first time I went to New York City was in 1997. I sort of invited myself on that trip. My friend Mike had a place to stay for a week in Battery Park and asked my friend Jane if she wanted to go. Jane said yes, and then I said I wanted to go, too. I don’t think that’s quite what Mike had in mind, but he said yes, anyway, and for Christmas, gave Jane and I maps and travel guides to the city. We went in January, and even though cold and wet, I loved being there.
What does that have to do with these photographs? Well, nothing, really, except these were taken in New York and I don’t know how many times I’ve been since that time with Jane and Mike, but whenever I’m there, I always think about that first trip.
This time I went to photograph Social Luxe, a fancy party for bloggers that takes place around the same time as the mega conference, BlogHer. It’s fun, and fancy, people get all dressed up, and it’s put together by some of my favorite people, Alison from Petit Elefant, Jayne from This Week for Dinner and Marie from Make and Takes.
Whenever I’m photographing a party, I have in my head the photographs of Larry Fink. Check out his book of images taken at some Hollywood parties for Vanity Fair. You can see it here.
I went back to New York a month later to photograph Alt Summit among other things. I can’t wait to post those pictures at a later time. For now, enjoy Social Luxe.
Vanessa Lachey was there. She’s pregnant.

The Pioneer woman, Ree Drummond. She totally remembered my name. I felt some pride.
Jill Zarin, from the Real Housewives of New York
Do you have something fancy you want me to photograph? A wedding perhaps? A swanky party of your own? I don’t care if there aren’t going to be any pregnant celebrities attending. I just care about making sure you have great pictures. Give me a jingle, we’ll talk.
