Kale Fitch made a beautiful film about the 30 Strangers project and I’d love for you to take it look.
The 30 Strangers Project | Justin Hackworth from Kale Fitch
The 30 Strangers project is a fund-raiser for the Center for Women and Children in Crisis. Participants in the project made donations to the shelter instead of paying me the standard portrait session fee.
The exhibit for this year’s version of the 30 Strangers (our 5th year) will be held at the BYU library in the auditorium gallery, from September 6 – October 28, 2012.
Our opening reception is on October 4, 2012 from 6-9pm and I hope to high-heaven you’ll be able to join us that evening. I’m going to post further details on my blog a little later about some exciting things that will be happening that night.
Thanks to Kale Fitch for the beautiful video.
This year’s 30 Strangers project is sponsored by The Brownstone Gallery

You are so beautiful, friend.
Such a great video summing up an amazing event.
This made me cry. I didn’t know you were so cool. Actually, yeah, yeah, I did.
You are so amazingly talented! I loved this video.
having a good cry this morning because of this. Thanks so much. poignant. Thanks for everything you are, Justin.
Good job man. Super awesome work you do. I’m gonna quote Beth on this one, “I didn’t know you were so cool. Actually, yeah, yeah, I did.”
This is a beautiful video, made me cry too. Made me think Amy and I need to do this with our mom!
So beautiful…my heart is full of emotion now for my four daughters, my three sisters, and my mom. Thank you so much for recognizing and honoring the mother-daughter relationship.
Heart strings tugged! Tears shed!
Beautiful work.
Ofcourse, I share the common sentiment that what you are doing /has been done is amazing,; however, beyond that I am most curious and felt the need to ask a bit more than the video explains, which I love btw. I wondered about the title. I’m guessing that anonymity is involved but is it that the donations are private or what? I suspect there is a great story behind the title, and my interest, to that end, is piqued.
Thanks for asking.
The title comes from the first time I did this project 5 years ago. When I started, the first year, it wasn’t mothers and daughters. Just individuals. So, there were actually only 30 people. I did 30 portraits of 30 people in 30 days. And because I liked the element of chance, I decided that they should all be strangers. So, that’s why it’s called 30 Strangers. Then, the following year when we decided it could have more meaning if we changed it up a little and did portraits of mothers and daughters instead of individuals, I still kept the title because I really like how it sounds. 30 Strangers. Sort of mysterious and makes you want to know more. And so one of the criteria for those that were chosen is that they needed to be strangers–people I’d never met before.
So, that’s why it’s called what it’s called.
The fundraiser portion works like this. Everyone that came got a free portrait session. Normally, a portrait session is $250. For the people that came for this project, that amount was waived, and instead, I asked them to make a small donation to the Center for Women and Children in Crisis. So I gave away 30 portrait sessions in a month and we raised a little money for the women’s shelter.
I hope that answers your questions, and if not, please feel free to let me know. Also, there is more info here: http://justinhackworth.com/blog/what-is-30-strangers/
Thanks for your interest.
My question was answered beautifully, thank you, very much!
The title definately sparks interest! I love it!
My own mother always said “strangers do strange things.” but, I had to wonder how one becomes anything but a stranger.
