Geoff lives in St. George and is a marriage councilor, which means I wanted to ask about a million questions about this and that and how often I should be buying Amy flowers and what does it mean if I want to go to the movie by myself sometimes and does he ever get in arguments with his wife about how many pillows should be on the bed?

These family pictures were taken in St. George over the Thanksgiving weekend. I loved being with Geoff and his family and I look forward to the next time I get to hang out with these very fine folks.

Cute Lisa called me up because her brother is on his way to Afghanistan and the whole family was getting together to send him safely off. So we all drove up to Provo Canyon on a recent Saturday and had a good time taking these pictures.

I like photographing people at their own home. For the most part, people are comfortable there, and if it’s a place where the kids grew up or spent a significant amount of time, then it can make the photographs a little more meaningful.

There are five boys in the McKay family. The girls would have come along, too, but they don’t have any girls. When people ask me how I like living in Provo, the one thing I always say is, “We love our neighbors.” Well, you’re looking at the reason Amy and I love living where we do. An example of how great they are. My family and I were in Idaho all last week and when we came home, our lawn had been mowed. Now, nobody left an invoice or a note that said, “If you want to know who you should thank for this, it’s…”. But I’m pretty sure the McKays did it. Just one example out of many. By the way, if you ever run out of eggs, I know from experience they’ve got some.

This is one of my favorite ways to make family portraits. That is, at the family’s house, casually, hanging out, just being themselves. And I feel like these kinds of pictures will be the most meaningful in years to come.

She and I met last year at BlogHer. But before that, Allison was in my office and said I should meet Jyl, and in fact, called her right then and there to tell Jyl she should meet me. (Allison is so good at connecting people).  I could hear the conversation on the other end of the phone. “Justin who?”

But now we’re best friends (probably) and I was happy when she called me to photograph her very charming family.

The Duncans were among the first people Amy and I met when we moved to Provo and it’s been a true blessing to know them (and I’m not just saying that because Rob painted our garage).

Turns out, we’re practically neighbors. And I saw Paige’s mom at the last Rooftop Concert. I’ll bet now that I’ve met them and found out we live near each other, I’ll run into them all the time. I sure hope so.

Mia and her mother came to my office and lit the place up. That both have that gift of making you feel like a million bucks. What a gift. My whole week was better, after they came in.

Now here’s a couple people I wish lived in my town. I bet we’d be friends and do stuff together. Right, Scotty and Michaela? They used to live here (I didn’t know them, then) and now they live in Washington D.C. and came to Utah for a family visit.
