Ben Silbermann
Here is the brilliant Ben Silberman, founder of Pinterest, photographed in Salt Lake City. He was the keynote speaker at Alt Design Summit and got a standing ovation at the end of his talk. I asked him if people recognize him now, on account of the success of Pinterest. He said, “Thank goodness, no. I would hate that.”

Sadey got married earlier this year and then had this really good idea to give her new husband some pictures of herself as a Christmas gift. Very thoughtful, I’d say. Way better than some socks. And I was flattered she asked me to photograph her.
Meet Sadey.

Megan’s the oldest in a family of awesome. She and her sisters are all funny, friendly, and have great style. If you get one of her sisters on the phone, it’s impossible to tell them apart. They sound the exact same. Same giggle, same voice inflections, same exact sound.
Megan told me that her two year old daughter wouldn’t like me and would most likely cry the whole time I was there. I’m happy to say that didn’t happen at all, and in fact, when I was walking out the door after taking these pictures, her daughter called out “Goodbye Justin. I love you.” And that’s a lot better than crying.

Megan is a writer, a great writer, and keeps a blog here.

There are some people that I am always secretly hoping they’ll ask me to photograph their family. Lucy has been on that list for a while, so that made my day when she emailed and said she wanted family pictures. Meet Lucy and Andrew, photographed at their home in Provo, UT.

Interested in family pictures like this for yourself? We should talk.

I bought a new soft box today and took it down to the studio to test it out. Here are some results. I don’t use strobes too often, but hey, maybe that’s about to change. I like how these turned out.

By the way, whenever I can, I get all my gear and supplies at Pictureline.

A couple years ago Maddie accompanied me to a wedding in Logan. She’s fun, easy to talk to, and has an amazing voice. So I was happy when she called and asked me to photograph her.
After I took some pictures of her I asked her to sing. One song wasn’t enough. I asked her to sing three. I think it’s the most lovely sound we’ve had in that studio so far.
Meet Maddie.

Diane is fun, interesting, a great listener, and once brought me brownies. I liked her long before she brought the brownies, but that kind of thing never hurts, you know.

Mario and Wendy are moving to California. See, Mario is a poet. He received a masters degree from Purdue and then, along with 2,000 other poets, applied for a Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University. Stanford gives out five each year and this year Mario was selected. It’s a two year fellowship, an amazing honor, and he leaves next week, taking his little family with him.
Today they came to the studio to view their pictures. As we sat together looking at all the images, I thought about how Mario’s life is going to change. Great things are coming his way. Their life isn’t going to be the same after this, and I thought about how meaningful it’s going to be for them to have these pictures later on, these little memories that mark this specific time in their life. This is the beginning.
Thanks for coming, Mario and Wendy, and best of luck at Stanford.

The poet, Mario Chard
And now, enjoy this beautiful poem from Mario Chard.

Our neighbors have a daughter leaving the nest. She’s off to college and headed to Idaho this week. So that seemed like a perfect reason to photograph her and her mother. Good luck up there at BYU-Idaho. And if your roommates try and talk you into spray painting the water tower so it says “Sexburg” instead of “Rexburg” just tell them it’s been done before.

Here’s a fun story that I think you’re going to like. Lacy came to my studio to be photographed with her mother and her two sisters…
Lacy
The mom, Kathryn
Sister, Keri
Sister, Madelyn
We talked a little bit so I could get to know them, you know, like I do. And then I started taking pictures. Everyone individually at first, then each daughter with their mother…

It was at this point that the conversation turned to Madelyn’s pregnancy. (Madelyn is the one on the left). She said something or other about when it was due, and then, Lacy said something like, well, she’ll have a little cousin about 8 weeks younger than her.
Someone's having a baby
That’s right. Lacy (far right) is pregnant. And she planned to come to my studio, then wait until just the right time to tell her mother and sisters the happy news. She wanted to have a picture of that very moment. Well played, Lacy. Well played.
Celebration

A happy day
Congratulations, Lacy. And thank you for allowing me the honor of being able to photograph such a happy moment. I just love the way this played out.

Fun facts: Chris is a writer. She’s bright and beautiful. Plus, her husband’s name is also Chris Ross. (They even have the same middle initial). How many people do you know that has the exact same name as their husband. I hope no one with the first name Brenda can make that claim.
Meet Chris Ross.

In other news – If you haven’t had a chance to see the 30 Strangers exhibit a the BYU library, this weekend is your last chance. The show comes down on Monday.
This week I was the guest guest judge on the popular blog I Heart Faces. It’s a resource for new photographers wanting tips and inspiration. Each week they have a theme and invite people to submit an image that goes along with that theme. You can read my interview here and see this week’s winning pictures here.
Tomorrow I’m having a photography workshop at my studio and looking forward to that. It’s the same workshop I gave at Evo Conference earlier this month (beginning SLR photography) and I plan to announce some dates this fall when I’ll repeat this same workshop. Ashley Thalman will be joining me tomorrow to make sure those participants get lots of individual attention.
Next week’s another busy week. I’m photographing a wedding on Friday and throughout the week I’ve got some engagement portraits and some family portraits lined up. Did you just get engaged and you want pictures of you and the one you love? Call me. 801.916.6993. Pricing info for portraits and weddings can be found here.

It’s always a nice compliment when another photographer asks me to photograph their family. And then when it comes to Heather Parkison, it’s a privilege just to hang around her for a while. Two things you should know about Heather Parkinson. She is a fantastic wedding and portrait photography. That’s the first thing. And the second thing, is that she and I are from the same home town: Rexburg, Idaho. We’re both Rexburgers. Heather, thanks for bringing the family to be photographed.
One of my favorite pictures of all time. I love this.

I like these two. Now, take a look at Hilary’s mother, there, and see if you can guess what her job is. If you guessed “chef” you’re wrong. But if you guessed librarian, ding ding ding ding ding ding ding, you’re right! She’s a librarian and she reminds me a little bit of my own mother (who was also a librarian for a while). We took a walk around Provo, not too far from my office and talked about old houses, the importance of showing up on time, and during all that, I made some portraits of this lovely mother and daughter duo.
Meet Hilary and Rebecca.

Meaghan, her mom and her grandmother came in to be photographed together. We had a good time. Laughed. Told some stories. And laughed a little more. During some of that time, I was taking pictures.

Have a great weekend! On Saturday I’ll be photographing the wedding of these love birds. What will you be up to?

Girls that came to our Blushing Event left with a gift bag stuffed with great offers, good deals, and lots of free stuff. Justin Hackworth Photography gave away mini portrait sessions to everyone. You’re reading that right. It wasn’t a give-away to a couple people. We offered it to every person that came to Blushing. So, that’s what Sara was doing at my studio.
When I asked her what we could do to make Blushing a better event next time, she thought for a long time and said she couldn’t think of anything to change. She LOVED it. In these pictures she’s wearing the pearl earrings that were in every girl’s gift bag from John Beesley Goldsmith. Again, not a giveaway to just a couple people. Every girl who came to our party got pearl earrings. We capped our guest list at 50 brides, and now I’m starting to feel bad for the girls that didn’t get to come. I guess we better do it again.
By the way, I love getting nice emails from nice people. Here’s what Sara had to say about her pictures. “I love them!!! Thank you so much, you are an incredible photographer, I absolutely love your work and I am so lucky to have known the right people to go to Blushing, to be photographed by you and to have you photograph bridals for me. I can’t wait! Thank you again!!!!”
No, no, no. Thank you, Sara.

Are you like me? Do you often go to someone’s blog to see what that person looks like only to discover that the photograph is so terrible you have mistaken them for a horse? The moral of this story (not really a story) is to make the right impression with a great profile picture. You’ll look legit, professional, and it’s also a very good way to stand out from the crowd. The picture you use says so much about you. Make sure it’s saying what you want.
I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, but Justin, won’t that cost a lot of money? Well, hold on to your hat.
I’m offering headshots for bloggers and anyone, really, that uses an online profile picture for social media and online business. And I’m offering this service at an incredible price.
$100 will get you a headshot portrait session at my studio plus 3 images of your choice that you are free to use for online purposes, your blog, LinkedIn, online store, profile picture for your next convention speaking engagement, Twitter, Facebook.
Just like a delicious pie sitting on the counter, this sweet deal isn’t going to last forever. I’m only offering this special rate in February and March 2011. For available days, further details, and additional samples, see our headshot page.
It’s time to put your best foot forward. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Reach for the stars, Tiger. Call me.

The night before Alt Design Summit began I was invited to dinner at The New Yorker restaurant in Salt Lake, sponsored by Hewlett Packard. I wondered if there was going to be anyone there I’d know. Turns out, some of my favorite people showed up: Stephanie and Christian as well as the very fine illustrator Sarah Jane and her husband. (She posted a picture of us on her blog).
And when I saw Maggie Mason, I was prepared to go up to her and say something impressive, like, you probably don’t remember me but I met you last year at Alt. But I didn’t get a chance. Instead, as soon as she saw me, she gave me a big hug and said, “Justin! It’s so great to see you.” Well how about that. Maggie Mason, you know know to treat a guy.

Maggie is the life of the party.
So in the spirit of whimsy and fun that is synonymous with Maggie, here’s a fun match game for you. Match the pictures below of Maggie with the mood of Maggie. Leave your answer in the comment section or play along on your own. Here are your choices:
Mighty Earnest – Mighty Mighty – Mighty Indignant – Mighty Graceful – Mighty Pugnacious – Mighty Peppy – Mighty Regal – Mighty Stealthy

Stephanie and John live in Maine. But they haven’t always lived there. They both grew up in Pocatello, Idaho (that’s where I was born!). And even though they’ve been married 10 years, they’ve known each other for quite a while. Get this. I didn’t know it at the time I was taking these pictures, but later in an email, Stephanie told me that she met John 30 years ago on that very street where I photographed them.
So now they live in Maine. I already mentioned that. John’s a doctor and Stephanie’s a photographer. Over Christmas they were back home in Idaho. So was I, and so I got to meet and photograph Stephanie and John, and John’s family. Stephanie was so fun and pleasant to be around. Since she’s a photographer, too, (plus a great conversationalist) I think I might have worn out my welcome.
Thanks, Hatzenbuehlers, for letting me join you for an hour or two during the holidays.

Here are some of my favorite portraits that I took in 2010. It’s been a busy year and I had a lot to choose from. There were many that I loved and that could have been included, but here’s the short list. Do you have a favorite?
I’m grateful for everyone that hired me to photograph them this year and I’m looking forward to a fantastic 2011.

What I remember most about Kim is her award winning smile. Kim and I went to Ricks College at the same time, back when it was called Ricks College. People that had never heard of it would ask, who the heck is Rick? But now it’s called BYU-Idaho. Hello dull name, goodbye funny joke. Oh well. Time marches on, but one thing that has stayed the same is that Kim still has that fabulous grin.
