Well, the cool kids came down to Provo and I got to photograph their little family. That tiny little angel is only four months old. Although I had never met Amber and Chris before, they were referred by my friend Stephanie and went to the U of U with my former house-mate. Small world. Thanks for coming to Provo for your family pictures, guys. Enjoy!

Tessa has a great job and she loves what she does. She is the editor of Utah Bride and Groom Magazine. It’s a perfect job for her because she loves weddings, wedding details, and she has a fantastic sense of style. And speaking of style, want to look great on your wedding day? Then call Enizio Salon. Want to see a sample of their great work? Then check out these pictures of Tessa. They did her makeup.

She wants to model. So, you call a make-up artist and a photographer and you put a portfolio together. Not bad for her first photo-shoot. And it’s a lot easier to look slick when you’ve got Amelia doing hair and make-up.
Thanks, all. This was a lot of fun.

I’ve know Brett since we were in Mrs McCullochs class, way back in the third grade. He’s one of the funniest people I know and I steal his jokes on a regular basis, then pass them off as my own. For example, once he sent me a slogan for the city of Orem that went like this: We’re just like Provo, only Norther!
I tell that to people but never let on that Brett said it first.
Brett is a talented actor but has for some time let that talent lie dormant. It’s been hidden under a bushel. That is, until recently. Now, he’s acting again. And for his most recent audition, he needed a headshot. That’s where I come in.
Here you go, Brett. Break a freak’n leg.

Do you think her name is Dolores Thompson or is it Kat Mandeville?

When she said her name was Kat Mandeville, I thought, of course it is. Someone that looks this groovy has to be named Kat Mandeville, or if this is you, and you’re name is something like Dolores Thompson, you’d have to change it to Kat Mandeville.
By the way, Kat’s a writer and keeps a blog here.

Who says you have to live in Provo to be photographed by me? And who says you have to be engaged? These two have been married three years and they live in Tennesse but had the good sense to give me a call when they found out they’d be here for a quick visit. Thanks Stephanie, for letting me photograph you two. It was great to meet you.

I met Jessica about a year ago when she responded to an ad I placed looking for an assistant. Lots of good candidates came by and Jessica got the job. I’m impressed with her charm and confidence. Around here, we try as hard as we can to provide our clients with world class service and Jessica knew just what that picture looked like. So now she’s moving because her husband is going to law school in another state. Thank you Jessica for all your help at Justin Hackworth Photography. You’ll be missed.

Me: Do you want to be famous?
Krissy: Yes I do.
Krissy is an opera singer. When she came to the studio I got her to sing for me and now I want her to be famous, too, because I think the world deserves to hear that beautiful voice of hers.

I love it when people stop by to say hello, just like Sammy did earlier today. And I just happened to have my camera with me and couldn’t pass up the chance to make some picutres of her. Sammy is a great painter and it was good to hear what she’s up to.

When Stephanie came to our party in December she said I couldn’t take any pictures of her. Well, now, that’s hardly a reasonable thing for a pretty girl to tell a photographer. But I respected her ridiculous request. So I was really glad she stopped by today so I could photograph her with a brand new hair cut from Patrick at Shep Salon. (And I’m really looking forward to spring so we can do another round of family pictures for her like we did last year).
Stephanie is the mind & spirit behind the enormously popular & style-tastic blog, stephmodo. Check it out.

I photographed Blair and Julie Buswell and their fabulous family today, and that was great, great. Blair is a well-known sculptor and I always love photographing other artists. I loved being in their home, seeing Blair’s work, listening to the kids play music, hearing Julie talk to them with so much respect and admiration. I drove away happy, thinking, man, what luck. This is what I do for a living.

Here’s a one-minute slideshow of more family pictures.
Quick story: I photographed some friends of mine and they told some of their friends about it. Then those people told their neighbors. Next thing you know, the neighbors (The Buswell’s) call up and say they’d like some family pictures. Turns out, he’s the boss of my wife’s book-club partner’s husband. Can you even believe it. Small world. Also, I’m so happy when people want to tell their friends about my work. It’s so meaningful to me, so thanks. Referrals make the world go around. And love. But mostly referrals.

Are you like me? Are you doing some reflecting? Are you looking back on 2008 and thinking about the good times, the bad times and getting excited knowing 2009 is going to be even better? For example, two nights ago I drank some hot chocolate. I think that’s the first time all year I’ve done so, and it’s delicious. I think I’m going to be drinking way more of that stuff in 2009.
So in the spirit of looking back, I’m showing my favorite portraits that I made in 2008. Which image here do you like best?

Sarah already told Michael what she wants for Christmas. She said she wants some portraits of the two of them from Justin Hackworth Photography. I always knew Sarah was smart.

I knew when I woke up yesterday that it would be another great day. Turns out, I was right.
Jon Canlas is a pretty big deal. He’s sponsored by Fuji, he publishes his weddings in all the finest wedding publications, and he photographs weddings all over the world. And the amazing thing, is that he’s only 16 years old. Just kidding. He’s older than that.
Yesterday he came to my office and we had a great time talking about why we shoot weddings and what moves us to be photographers. He told me about his process and I told him about mine. (One thing that’s becoming increasing unique about Jon’s route is that he shoots all film). And we talked about the photographers we admire both in the wedding industry and in the commercial world.
I’ve admired Jon’s work for some time now, so it made me so happy to be able to spend a couple hours talking about the craft with someone I respect. Thanks, Jon. I want to have more days like that.

Everyone loves her wildly popular blog, DesignMom, but the real fun is being around her. Gabrielle is funny, bright, lively, and spirited. No wonder moms find so much joy from her site.
Gabrielle: Thanks so much for your time. It was a real pleasure meeting you. I hope our paths cross again soon.

Janet writes on internet marketing, affiliate marketing, business blogging, and social media. She came to my studio because she’s updating her blog and wanted a new portrait to go with it. Two things about Janet really impressed me. One – she knows so much about the convoluted world of SEO and business blogging. A true expert. At one point I found myself thinking it felt like I was at a seminar. She is so smart. The second thing that impressed me was how generous she was in answering all my questions. All 5,000 of them. She even gave me a tutorial on how to use Twitter. (I still don’t get it. Come back, Janet).
By the way, this isn’t my first time making pictures of her. I photographed her earlier this year when she got married.
