I’ve been in Idaho since Sunday. I’m photographing a wedding in Rexburg in a couple days, but in the mean time, we’ve been in Island Park and Yellowstone. They tell you to keep at least 100 yards away from a bear, but some of those photographers apparently know better than the silly rangers and got right up close. Look how cute that bear is. It’s not going to maul anyone.
And that’s how you shoot a bear.

We announced that we’d be giving away a free engagement session each Monday in May. Congratulations to Cody who is our first winner. You’re a winner, Cody, so don’t ever let anyone tell you different.
An update: I’m on vacation right now and so Monday I didn’t make another engagement session give-away post so we’ll do a make-up post in June. Still, plenty of chances to win. The next engagement session give-away post will be on May 17th! Stay tuned for that.
And now, vacation pictures.

Don’t wait up. I’m headed to Vegas. Every year, there is a trade show and convention for wedding and portrait photographers. It’s called WPPI. I love being there and meeting other photographers doing great work and meeting with vendors that can help us make our business better and increase our service to our clients. This year, the keynote speaker is Gregory Heisler. This year, WPPI is legit.
Suitcases are packed. I just need to put them in the car, right after I make this post. Then, I’m hitting the road.

Update on the 30 Strangers. If you haven’t already put your name on the list, you have until midnight tonight. Tomorrow morning we’ll randomly select the participants and send an email to confirm the date we’d like to photograph you. Thanks to everyone that expressed an interest.
And now, Vegas, baby.

It’s disturbing to see the news from Haiti. I think, how can another bad thing happen to Haiti. Although poverty-stricken, it’s a vibrant county with a rich and lively culture. I’ve been to Haiti twice and have loved my time spent there and fallen in love with the people I’ve met.
And now, an earthquake. It has decimated the most populated area of the island. There are a number of worthy organizations that have stepped up to help our Haitian neighbors and I’d like to mention one such group and encourage you to take some action: Partners of the Americas. From their website: Partners’ mission is to work together as citizen volunteers from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States to improve the lives of people across the hemisphere. I’ve taken a number of trips for Partners to document the good work they are doing to fulfill their mission. It’s not hyperbolic to say they change lives.
Care to do something for the people of Haiti? You can donate here (specify Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund). Those people need help.
Here are some of the photographs I took on my trip to Haiti in July, 2009

Back in the summer of 1998, I drove across the country, starting in New York City and arriving in Salt Lake. This photograph was taken on that trip, near the Texas/New Mexico border. My friend Brooke was moving from NYC to LA and asked me to come along for the ride.
Today it’s raining in Provo (I heard there’s snow in the mountains) and outside it looks a little bit like it does in this picture from 11 years ago.
Goodbye, summer. I’m going to miss you.

On the first night I arrived in Haiti, after I had settled in at the Hotel Christophe, I asked Benito if he’d show me around the city. We drove to the top of a hill, allowing a grand view of the city. That was nice, sure, and good to see the lay of the land, but as I was walking around I noticed some stairs that led to a basketball court just below us. What was going on down below was much more interesting to me that a bunch of buildings.

Believe it or not, this photograh is in color, not in black and white. You can see a slight amount of color on the top left side. I think that pink color cast is coming from the shower curtain. I took this picture while asking the question, “What would Amanda James do in this situation?”

No, not the best photograph I’ve ever taken, but something about this pictures amuses me.

Last Thursday I went to the Dominican Republic. Stayed until Sunday, and then took a 7 hour bus to Cap Haitien, Haiti. Tomorrow I’ll be back in Provo. I’ve had a great time but it’s always nice to get back home. For one thing, I’m out of clean clothes.
I’ve been doing some work for Partners of the Americas. I’ve been to Haiti for them before. Here are three teasers from this most recent trip. I’ll be posting many more in the following days.

From my journal:
July 11, 2009 – San Jose de Acoa
9:50pm – Juan is checking every room in the hotel. He wants to see which two rooms are the best. They all look the same to me. Oh, except there is one difference with room six. Since the door knob is broken, you have to open that room with a spatula.

For the next week, my communication channels (email, phone, blog, face to face) will be extremely limited. But on July 18th I’ll be back in the saddle. Talk to you then.
Thanks.

After the WPPI convention in Vegas (huge trade show for wedding and portrait photographers) I spent a couple hours walking around. Now, I’m back home.

We rode the train to Long Island. Had dinner with Kristi and her neighbor Lou. Jordan and Janna were there too.
I don’t know how this happened but we slept until 11am so by the time we got up, Jordan and Janna had to head back to Virginia. See you brother. We’re going to the beach.
We took some pictures as the sun went down. It was chilly, but mostly you didn’t notice because it felt like paradise being with family and friends.

Gheen and I arrived in New York last Wednesday with plenty of time to walk around and see if there was anyone selling hats in that town.

I like the big fuzzy one.

I’ll be out of town for a week and won’t have my computer with me. But I’ll have my phone and will check my messages in the evening if you would still like to get a hold of me.

It’s been a while since Christian and I have done anything together. That’s why I was so excited when he invited me to go kayaking with him at Leigh Lake, just past Jackson Hole on the Wyoming side of the Tetons. Christian and I grew up together and I’ve known him for thirty-one years. I was eight years old when I went to his 9th birthday party and we played “No bears are out tonight”. It’s true. No bears were out that night and I lived to tell about it.
We paddled the kayaks straight ahead to the shore. It’s there we ate lunch. Sandwiches, beef jerky, gatorade, and some gummi candy. Then the dark clouds started rolling over the Tetons.
A shot from Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
It started to rain, but not until we were already on the way back home. Now that’s a Saturday.

A conversation in the lobby of the Braxton Hotel,
Hotel Guest: It’s a big flying thing. It’s big. Like a bee. Can you help me?
Front Desk Clerk: I’m sorry sir. I need to stay here. But if you’d like to check with us in the morning then we might be able to work something out.
Guest: In the mean time what am I supposed to do with that bug in my room.
Clerk: I don’t know what to tell you.
Guest: Well do you have any bug killer.
Clerk: No. We don’t have anything like that here.
Guest: Jesus, this place…!
Clerk: If you’d like to check with us in the morning, it’s possible we can change your room.
Guest: I don’t want to change rooms. I’m already settled. I’ve been here for three days already. I don’t want to change rooms.
Clerk: Well then I don’t know what else I can do for you except discuss this in the morning.
Guest: And what do I do in the mean time? Sleep on that couch over there?
Clerk: No, sir. You can’t sleep on the couch.
Guest: Well don’t you have any bug spray or something.
Clerk: No we don’t have any.
Guest: Urggg
Clerk: Let me go see what I have. (He goes to the back room and returns about 30 seconds later). Here. You can try this.
Guest: What is it?
Clerk: I don’t know. It’s some spray we have back here. I think it is for cleaning the sinks.
Guest: You don’t have any bug spray?
Clerk: That’s all we have. Now, I’ll see you in the morning.
Guest: Unbelievable.
(The man goes upstairs to his room on the third floor. A few minutes later he comes back down for something else. The desk clerk gave him a manila folder to hit the bug.)
Clerk: Use this.
Guest: I can’t use that. He’s flying.
Clerk: You have to wait until he is sitting still.
Guest: Jesus. Don’t you don’t have a night manager?
Clerk: No. You will have to wait until morning. Ask Larry in the morning.
Guest: What’s he going to do?
Clerk: That’s a question you will have to ask Larry.
