Amanda and Chris got married in Idaho Falls last month. That’s where she’s from. They’ve both been in L.A. now that school is finished for both of them and they’re just working hard at jobs they like.
So I got to Idaho the night before the wedding and went to Amanda’s house where a party with friends and family was in full swing. The nicest people you’d ever meet. Amanda’s parents even have a sign hanging in their kitchen that says, “be nice”.
The next day, the wedding day, the sun came out and love was in the air.
Meet Amanda and Chris.

Sometimes, that second set of footprints in the sand isn’t Jesus’s. They are your brothers. And he isn’t wearing any pants.

We just spent the week in Idaho. In Rexburg. Oh, sure the weather was a bit chilly and the wind blew some times, but that didn’t stop us from having a grand time.
Rexburg, that place is a change’n. It’s not the same as when I grew up there. But there are a few things that are still the same. It still only takes twelve minutes to get to the sand dunes. Once there, you might be the only one around for miles. Standing on the big ole dunes, you can watch a sunset on one horizon and see the mighty Grand Tetons on the opposite horizon. You can still see the hand of God in such a beautiful place. Those things haven’t changed one bit.

Stephanie and John live in Maine. But they haven’t always lived there. They both grew up in Pocatello, Idaho (that’s where I was born!). And even though they’ve been married 10 years, they’ve known each other for quite a while. Get this. I didn’t know it at the time I was taking these pictures, but later in an email, Stephanie told me that she met John 30 years ago on that very street where I photographed them.
So now they live in Maine. I already mentioned that. John’s a doctor and Stephanie’s a photographer. Over Christmas they were back home in Idaho. So was I, and so I got to meet and photograph Stephanie and John, and John’s family. Stephanie was so fun and pleasant to be around. Since she’s a photographer, too, (plus a great conversationalist) I think I might have worn out my welcome.
Thanks, Hatzenbuehlers, for letting me join you for an hour or two during the holidays.

“I ain’t afraid of prison. That’s what makes me dangerous.” First thing he said to me after I asked him if I could take his picture.
After I went to see my grandpa in St. Anthony, Idaho, I took a walk down that little hump of town where all the businesses are clustered together. At 2:20 in the afternoon, a couple fellows made their way out of the Spur and Sports Saloon, and into broad daylight.
“What are you going to do, put those in a book somewhere in California?” I said, no way. I’m not from California. I’m from Rexburg. He said, well you grew up in California. I said, no, I grew up in Rexburg. My grandpa just lives down the street, right here in St. Anthony. I just went to visit him.
“Really? Your grandpa lives in St. Anthony? My grandpa lives in St. Anthony, too. Do you know, one time I said to my grandpa, do you know that you were 12 years old when Wyatt Earp died? He said, who the hell is Wyatt Earp. Now that’s cool.”

Today one of my favorite people on planet earth will get married. Miss Ashley Shaum. Ashley spent a few months as an intern in my office last year. While in Provo, she met Alden. A few months after they met, he moved to Hawaii for school and she went along with him. Not long after that, he proposed to her on the beach. In Hawaii. At sunrise. Now that’s romantic.
And today, in Rexburg, Idaho, her hometown (mine too!) they’ll be wed. And I get to photograph the big event. I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time.

If you drive an hour north of Sun Valley in the central mountains of Idaho, you’ll pass Dooley Creek and climb Galena pass, then level off at 7,000 feet about five miles before you get to Stanley. Now, turn off Highway 75 and head west to Red Fish Lake. If you ask the local folks at the lodge about the weather they’ll tell you it can snow up there any day of the year.
So when you leave your cabin at 5:55am on September 1st for a sunrise wedding, that’s when you notice you’ll be shooting in a blizzard.
But that’s not where the story begins. The story starts when Jason and Jenna are in high school. Back when Jason and his buddy thought it would be funny to sneak into Jenna’s house and put on her clothes while she was sleeping. Imagine how that looked when Jenna’s mother came in. That’s the first time she had ever met Jason. Oh, sure, they laugh about it now…
A few years later, he was living in San Fransisco and she was living in Boise. Their folks both say it was the Lord that got them back together. The engagement was speedy, and on September 1st, 2008, in the Central Mountains of Idaho, Jenna and Jason got married in a snow storm. It was, on all accounts, beautiful.
You can see a three minute slide show of their wedding here.
