We’ve had some fabulous weather for every one of our Rooftop Concerts. Friday, however, not so great. But instead of being sad about it and crying in our chicken soup, we just moved from the top of the parking deck to one floor beneath. The rain can’t get you there. But the cold can, so people showed up prepared for a bit of a chill. Coats and hot chocolate and some very good music. What a great night.

It started with the lovely Stephanie Maybe.

Stephanie Maybe

And Dustin Christensen (I’m listening to his new album as I type this) played a great set with songs from his new album and a Tom Petty cover.

Everyone’s favorite blogger and writer, C. Jane kept things moving along.

Then then mayor came up and thanked the Rooftop Committee (C. Jane, Mindy Gledhill, Sarah Wiley, me) for putting the series together. He gave us all a nice gift. How thoughtful. And then he and Helen Anderson crowned C. Jane the princess of Provo. She said to everyone, “That was a surprise, but I totally deserve it”. True.

C. Jane crowned Provo royalty

And then the Lower Lights blew us all away.

If you’ve been to any of the concerts this year, or if you plan on coming next year, or if you like what we’re trying to do for downtown Provo, we’ll ask that you make a donation to our concert series. This will help us get up and running for 2012 and will help us keep the concerts free for everyone.

The link to donate is here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/rooftop/the-rooftop-concert-series

You’ll notice there are some really great incentives for donating including music from the Rooftop musicians and house concerts from some of them.

One of the incentives is a portrait session from me. Portrait sessions are normally $250 but you can get one for a $200 donation to the concert series. How about that. You save 50 bucks, plus you help out a very good cause. Don’t delay. There are a limited number of sessions available. UPDATE – The portrait sessions are sold out, but there are still plenty of other great incentives for you to choose from.

Even if you only want to donate a dollar. Every little bit helps.

And hopefully we’ll see you on the Rooftop in 2012.

Fun facts: Chris is a writer. She’s bright and beautiful. Plus, her husband’s name is also Chris Ross. (They even have the same middle initial). How many people do you know that has the exact same name as their husband. I hope no one with the first name Brenda can make that claim.

Meet Chris Ross.

In other news – If you haven’t had a chance to see the 30 Strangers exhibit a the BYU library, this weekend is your last chance. The show comes down on Monday.

This week I was the guest guest judge on the popular blog I Heart Faces. It’s a resource for new photographers wanting tips and inspiration. Each week they have a theme and invite people to submit an image that goes along with that theme. You can read my interview here and see this week’s winning pictures here.

Tomorrow I’m having a photography workshop at my studio and looking forward to that. It’s the same workshop I gave at Evo Conference earlier this month (beginning SLR photography) and I plan to announce some dates this fall when I’ll repeat this same workshop. Ashley Thalman will be joining me tomorrow to make sure those participants get lots of individual attention.

Next week’s another busy week. I’m photographing a wedding on Friday and throughout the week I’ve got some engagement portraits and some family portraits lined up. Did you just get engaged and you want pictures of you and the one you love? Call me. 801.916.6993. Pricing info for portraits and weddings can be found here.

Sarah Sample calling your name

by justin on June 29, 2011

in Music,Rooftop Concert

What I want is another afternoon like the one I had yesterday when Sarah Sample came to the studio. When she arrived I asked her to sit for a bit so I could ask her some questions and once we started talking I wanted to talk all afternoon. But hey, Sarah’s busy, so we left the studio and walked a few blocks around Provo. I’d stop sometimes and say, stand here, look this way, and on and on like that while I took pictures trying to pay particular attention to those times when she’d raise up that right shoulder or close her eyes on the high notes. Sarah Sample is groovy and laid back and when she plays some chords on that guitar, then sways, even the way she sways is lovely.

Want to see such things first-hand? Then you won’t want to miss our Rooftop Concert this Friday at 8pm. Bring a blanket and a chair but make sure it’s one of those low to the ground chairs, because Sarah’s voice just might knock you out of it, and I don’t want you to get injured when you hit the ground. I care about your fragile hip.

Here’s where you can listen and buy Sarah’s album and she’ll also be selling them at the concert tomorrow night.

And now enjoy this.

Coming up soon, in October, I’m going to be part of a very cool art exhibit at BYU. I’m really happy about that. The exhibit begins October 5th and there is an opening reception on October 14th and you are welcome to come join us. I hope to see you there.

Here are the details about the exhibit from their website:

Nature and Nurture: Narratives of Family, an exhibition of 10 contemporary artists with ties to Utah or BYU will be on display in the BYU Harris Fine Arts Center B.F. Larsen Gallery October 5,2010 – October 28, 2010. An panel discussion and opening reception will be held Thursday October 14, 2010.

The exhibition will include artwork by Lee Udall Bennion, Emily Fox, Justin Hackworth (hey, that’s me!), Lisa Jackson, Brian Kershisnik, Emily McPhie, Annie Poon, Madison Smith, Christopher Thornock, and Janis Wunderlich.

The exhibitions’ goal is to explore the complex relationships between mothers, fathers, daughters, and sons through a diverse range of artistic mediums and styles. By concentrating on images of the family, and parenthood in particular, this exhibition hopes to provide insight into the beautiful yet challenging dynamics that lie at the core of the family.

And speaking of exhibits, here’s a reminder that the 30 Strangers exhibit is now showing at the Provo Library until September 29th so you still have a little bit of time to get-on down there and check it out.

Also, this Thursday, September 23rd at 6pm, I’ll be speaking at the Provo Library (in the room right across the hall from the art gallery) and I’m going to be talking about the 30 Strangers project, my process of making portraits, and how you can make better portraits of your own. Informative, fun, and there may even be cookies at the end. And who doesn’t love a good cookie.

Here’s what’s going on this week

by justin on July 29, 2010

in business

Here’s what I’ve been up to this week, or, links up the ying-yang.

Met with Courtney Kendrick (you probably know her as CJane), Sue Bradford, and Sarah Wiley yesterday about the Rooftop concert series coming up in Provo (on a roof!). It’s coming together. You’ll hear more about this very soon.

Helped Mindy Gledhill move a 700 pound piano to her office then took some pictures of her playing that very piano.

Slept in a tent last night in the backyard with my boys. It’s a trial run for this weekend.

Getting ready to head to New York City next week to photograph the BlogHer convention and Trevor Christensen is coming to shoot it with me.

Invited Jaimie to my office yesterday to view her wedding pictures.

Enjoying the crud out of my new phone.

Georgia brought me a newspaper article in the Daily Universe about the 30 Strangers exhibit that took place earlier this month.

Lucky me, Nat the Fat Rat came to say hello! I can’t get over what a joy she is.

Working on my life creed with help from Leo Weidner.

Did some test printing with a new photo lab – ProDPI – that I’ve been meaning to try. I think I may have found a new lab.

Wedding photographs after the wedding

by justin on July 15, 2010

in Weddings

Who said your wedding photography needs to take place on your wedding day? Oh, sure that might be ideal, but there’s nothing wrong with getting some of those forgotten pictures after the fact. That’s what Maren did. There were a few important pictures she felt she didn’t get from her photographer on the day of the wedding so she called me to fill in the gaps.

Maren and Nate were photographed at Huber Grove in Wasatch Mountain State Park.

Wow. Last night was amazing. I’m calling it a grand success. It’s hard to know exactly how many people came to our 30 Strangers exhibit but I estimate about 300 – 350 people.

I just can’t say enough how grateful I am for those that came and for those that were part of the project.

A more lengthy description will come soon, complete with photographs from a couple of Provo’s finest photographers that will show how things played out at the exhibit last night.

But for now, if you missed it, you still have some time to see the exhibit. We’ll be open on the following days and times:
July 5   12pm – 8pm
July 6-9 2pm – 5pm
Gallery address – 26 West Center Street – Provo UT

Important note: The 30 Strangers project is a fund raiser for the Center for Women and Children in Crisis. During our exhibit, our fundraiser continues. For a $75 donation to the Center, you can schedule your own mother-daughter portrait session on select days July – October. Come on down to the exhibit to sign up.

Provo Canyon on a Sunday afternoon

Provo portrait photography

I love how close I live to this place. On Sunday, the temperature at my house was 4,000 degrees. We drove 15 minutes up the road, just above Sundance in Provo Canyon, and it was 20 degrees cooler that it was in Provo. Not that it mattered to my son. He has little use for shirts in nearly any kind of weather.

Dave is one of my favorite people and also, he’s hilarious. I don’t know about you, but I love to laugh, so I love to be around Dave. Trouble is, he lives in California so we don’t get to see each other very much. In fact, I hadn’t seen him since he’s had kids. Yikes. So I was really happy when he wanted me to photograph his family when he was in Utah for a visit.

Thanks for coming, Dave.

If you were an OB/GYN and your job was to deliver babies in a hospital, don’t you think it would be mighty ironic to have a baby in your car on the way to the hospital? Well that’s just what happened to Bethany. Oh, sure they laugh about it now…

Here’s Bethany and Brandon with their kids, photographed in Provo Canyon.

I’ve know Brandon for over 11 years, now. For about the first 7 of those years, I only knew him by his nickname: Fatbox. They live in Texas now, and I’m so glad they called me to get family pictures done while they were out here in Utah visiting. Thanks so much for coming, Brandon and Bethany. It was really great to see you.

30 Strangers – Day Fifteen

by justin on April 17, 2010

in 30 Strangers-2010

We’re half way through the project and things are going great.

Let me tell you about Veronica. She lives in Texas and thought it would be great to be a part of our 30 Strangers project. So she left a comment on the blog and hoped she’d get picked. But there were lots of people that left a comment and only 30 spots. Sorry to say, she didn’t get picked.

This story has a happy ending, though.

So one day she was reading through all the other comments and noticed that someone named Lauren had left a comment. She wondered if it just happened to be her daughter Lauren. Turns out, it was her daughter, and it turns out that Lauren got picked so Veronica got to be one of the strangers after all. Warms your heart, yes?

Meet Veronica and Lauren.

Ashlee came to our 30 Strangers exhibit in July and liked what she saw. She decided she wanted to get her whole family together for the kind of family picture she couldn’t get anywhere else. I photographed the whole family in downtown Provo, just a couple blocks from my studio. We stopped traffic. That’s not hyperbole. I mean traffic actually stopped, because I was in the middle of the road to take that top picture.

Artist Statement – 30 Strangers exhibit

A famous war photographer once said, “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.” He meant close, as in proximity. He meant move in close and leave anything out that isn’t necessary. And for a long time that’s the only way I read the quote, until a friend suggested it could also mean emotionally close.

So people come to be photographed. I want to like them and I want them to like me. I don’t know if I should admit that or not. They come to the studio, and I fish a little for some common ground. I ask where they grew up, what they studied in college, why they chose to study law instead of chemistry. I ask myself, How can I relate to these folks? And I try, like the quote suggests, to move closer.

On April 1st, 2009 and for the following 29 days, I photographed strangers. Mothers and daughters. Sometimes grandmothers, mothers, and daughters. We talked some, and then I took pictures.

This is where those conversations took us.

…….

Last Thursday we had our 30 Strangers exhibit and I had such a great time. I want to thank all of those of you that attended. On that night we extended our fund raiser for the Center for Women and Children in Crisis and we were able to raise another $1,000 for their organization.

The exhibit was the culmination of hundreds of hours of work that started in April and it felt good to see it on display. We’ll do this again. Oh yes, you can count on that.
