Justin Hackworth photographs twins, individuals, people that look like twins but aren’t, people that don’t look alike at all, people that want to look like Justin, people that have no idea what Justin looks like, tall people, squatty folks, dog lovers, people that are indifferent about dogs, people that have been to Poland, people that love Polish sausages, and he wants to photograph you.

Here’s a visual summary of our 30 Strangers project from 2009. What’s the 30 Strangers project? Here’s where you can read about this portrait project and fund raiser. And while the photographs have all been taken, we aren’t finished yet. We’re planning an exhibit for July 2nd (more details to follow soon) and I can’t wait. I just got off the phone with Kent Miles who has agreed to help me sequence the show. Kent has had more gallery exhibitions than any other photographer in Utah (solo or group shows) and having his input will make all the difference. It’s all in the details, don’t you know.

A week before we were going to take these engagement pictures, Kaitlyn and Jared came by my studio to meet first, then talk about what they had in mind, and just to see if we were on the same page regarding how to make some engagement pictures that were a true reflection of what they were like as a couple. It gave me a chance to ask a few questions about them–you know, how they met, who liked who first, and all the details about their wedding. So when they came back to be photographed I knew a little bit about them.
All you need to know about them is that they are in love, can’t stop smiling when they look each other in the eye, and they are about as charming as can be. These engagement pictures were all taken in Provo Utah. Enjoy.

Who says you have to live in Provo to be photographed by me? And who says you have to be engaged? These two have been married three years and they live in Tennesse but had the good sense to give me a call when they found out they’d be here for a quick visit. Thanks Stephanie, for letting me photograph you two. It was great to meet you.

Me: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Her: A dentist.
Me: Why do you want to be a dentist?
Her: Because when I tell people “it’s your turn” they will come right then.
Sarah is an illustrator. Do yourself a favor and check out her work here. I LOVE what she does and was so glad to meet her. Thanks for coming, Sarah.

Justin: (to the daughter) It’s Friday night. What are you going to do tonight?
Daughter: I don’t know.
Mother: You’re going to babysit.
Daughter: Babysit? Why?
Mother: Because Mama looks hot. I’m going out.

We’re excited to announce a new photography project coming up next month. It’s called 30 Strangers: Generations, and it’s inspired by the 30 Strangers project I completed in June 2008. (See it here). The idea behind the project is to photograph 30 portraits of 30 strangers in 30 days.
This year, every day in April, I will photograph a different mother and daughter whom I’ve never met. We’re hoping that on many days we’ll have not just two generations, but three or four.
Want to be part of the project? Believe me, spots will go fast. To participate, please read the info carefully on this page.
I can’t stress that enough. Please read all the info carefully before you contact us. That page will give you everything you need to know about the project–when, where, why–and how to let us know you want to be involved.
As part of the project, we’ll be raising some money for the Center for Women and Children in Crisis, a shelter and safe house here in Provo. If you want to make a donation too, it’s so easy.
Once our project begins, daily updates will be posted here, so stay tuned.

Pictured above are participants from last year’s project.

When Stephanie came to our party in December she said I couldn’t take any pictures of her. Well, now, that’s hardly a reasonable thing for a pretty girl to tell a photographer. But I respected her ridiculous request. So I was really glad she stopped by today so I could photograph her with a brand new hair cut from Patrick at Shep Salon. (And I’m really looking forward to spring so we can do another round of family pictures for her like we did last year).
Stephanie is the mind & spirit behind the enormously popular & style-tastic blog, stephmodo. Check it out.

Last year, the 30 Strangers project was a big success. Right now, we’re working out the details for our 30 Strangers project–2009. Details will follow soon that will include when we’ll be doing the project, as well as who we’ll be looking to photograph and how we’ll present the finished work. There will be some changes from how we did things last year.
As we talk further regarding our plans for the project, I just get so excited. That’s why I couldn’t resist writing a post about it. Stay tuned and I’ll let you know all about it.

I wrote a short article called “Six Ways To Be A Better Photographer – Right Now” and it’s now posted on one of my favorite blogs: Stephmodo.com. Here’s the link:

The Robisons used to live right behind us. They don’t now, and we miss them dearly. And not just because Julie used to pass delicous food to us over the fence. (The dolmathes were my favorite and she made them from the grape leaves that grew on the fence between our yards). We miss them because they were fabulous neighbors.
So I was happy when they called and wanted some family pictures. Taken January 1, this is my first portrait session of 2009.

Here’s where you can see all of their family pictures

They call him Frank. I call him Tom. Here’s what happened. The night before these pictures were taken, I met Frank for the first time at our party. Stace introduced me and told me her husband’s name. The next morning I went to their home and prided myself on remembering his name, even though I had only meet him once, the night before, among many others that came to the studio to say hello. I kept calling him Tom and at one point, realized that I was the only one calling him that. Stace kept calling him Frank. Turns out, she was right, I was wrong. His name is Frank. Oh. Hi Frank.
Ok, so the joke’s on me. But they were gracious and we had a great time making these pictures. They even danced. I love that.
In addition to the images below, I have also posted a slideshow that shows a few more of their family pictures.
Thanks Christianson family. I had a great time.

Sarah already told Michael what she wants for Christmas. She said she wants some portraits of the two of them from Justin Hackworth Photography. I always knew Sarah was smart.

Here’s a short slideshow with a few more of their portraits.

It won’t be long before these guys are moving to Germany. So they came to town to say goodbye to family and friends. While they were in Provo, I think they did something very smart. They made an appointment to get family pictures taken. (I love smart people). Claire found me on Stephanie’s blog. (I love Stephanie’s blog).
Here’s a slideshow of more of their family pictures. (I love taking family pictures).

We only have ten available portrait sessions left for the month of November. Interested in getting something for Christmas? Time is running out. Call me.

Working as a photographer herself, Tracy had come to this place in Provo before to take pictures. She loved the colors. She shot film, then had it cross processed.
So when it came time for family pictures, she remembered this place.
I followed her and Shep over. I wasn’t sure where we were going, but when I saw that building, I thought, well if that’s not where we’re going, we should certainly stop anyway. Turns out, that’s what Tracy had in mind. I love it when we’re on the same page.

And now, here’s their one minute slideshow:

Before you go to France, come by my studio and I’ll make some great portraits of you. That’s what Betty did. I’ll ask if you play the trombone (Betty doesn’t) and we’ll listen to Tahita 80. You might dance on the table, you might not. I’ll tell you a funny story about the time I lived in Mexico and we’ll laugh some.
In the end, the pictures will be fabulous and we’ll both be glad you came by. We’ll feel like it’s a great way to spend a couple hours just days before you’re off to school in France. Then, seven years later you’ll pull out those photographs and think about how much you’ve changed in such a short amount of time and you’ll think about just how lucky you are to have such pictures that mark the passing of time.
Don’t you just love photography?
