Turns out, we’re practically neighbors. And I saw Paige’s mom at the last Rooftop Concert. I’ll bet now that I’ve met them and found out we live near each other, I’ll run into them all the time. I sure hope so.

Last month Stephanie and Courtney spoke during Women’s Conference at BYU and were accompanied by their other two sisters, Paige and Lucy. They were, just as you’d expect, inspiring and entertaining.

I don’t very often post the pictures I take of Stephanie. She usually puts them on her blog and that suits me just fine. More of these images from BYU can be seen on her blog, here. And while you’re at it, you can check out the pictures I took at her Kentucky Derby Party.

I love photographing weddings at Sundance.
Turns out, it’s also a great place to ski.

Here’s a band I love: The Head and the Heart. They are from Seattle. That’s where I saw them first. Then last month fortune shined on Provo and they came to town, played at Velour.
Here is Jon Russell from the Head and the Heart, photographed outside Velour on the night of their show.

If you’d like to see some photographs from their show, you can watch this two minute slideshow. Then go buy their CD. These guys are the real deal.

It’s so fun to photograph people you love. Take for example, Sarah and Tim. I’ve photographed them before and I always look forward to it. For one thing, they are totally open to anything. Plus, they have a few ideas of their own. And they’re just down-right interesting to talk to.
Here you go. Sarah and Tim:

Their 5 year anniversary is coming up and Sarah said, “We’re getting Tim a phone and me some diamonds.”
And here’s what Sarah had to say on her blog about their experience.

Don’t forget, the Lower Lights play a free show today, October 1st at 8pm on the roof of the Central Bank parking lot in Provo and sponsored by Cjane. The address is 100 North and 100 West. Libbie Linton will also perform. It’s going to be great and I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. Here are some pictures from a recent Lower Lights rehearsal.

In other news, October is shaping up to be a busy month and it’s only just started. I have twenty-six portrait sessions scheduled and four weddings. Ten of those sessions are in Denver. I had only planned on doing six there, but added four additional sessions to accommodate requests.
In August I went to New York to photograph the BlogHer convention and will go to San Francisco next week to photograph another one of their conventions. It’s a much smaller affair this time, so I won’t get to take Trevor along, like last time. Don’t worry Trevor. We’ll shoot it again together next year in San Diego.
A couple days ago I took down the 30 Strangers exhibit that had been at the Provo Library for the month of September. Two pieces from last year and two from this year will be part of an exhibit at BYU this month. I already mentioned the exhibit on my blog, here, and will probably mention it again as the day of the opening (October 14th, gets a little closer). In conjunction with the exhibit, I gave a lecture at the library last week about portrait photography and how to improve your own pictures. If I get around to it, I’d like to whip up some notes I used and write a post on what was said. This comes as a suggestion from Marta.
Earlier this week I was at WedSmith as the official photographer. Hilary at Alta Moda knows how to plan an event. It was fantastic and I’m really happy to have been a part of it. I’ll post some of the pictures soon, but in the mean time, I just wanted to mention that I got to meet Lara Casey and I dig that lady. She is so impressive. Meeting her made my whole month.
So, here we go. October. Let the good times roll.

If I could sing as well as Mindy Gledhill, I would never use a speaking voice. I would sing everything I wanted to say. I would order food in a singing voice. My voice mail message would be a song. I wouldn’t even talk in my sleep. I’d sing in my sleep. I would always be singing. That’s if I had a voice like Mindy Gledhill.
For me, making friends with Mindy is one of the highlights of 2010. This girl is all charm. She is driven to be a great artist and entertainer (which I totally admire), she’s affable, beautiful, caring, and like I said before, has a voice that will melt you. Mindy Gledhill is amazing and I adore her.

And now, this can’t come soon enough. Mindy will be performing on August 2nd at the Covey Center in Provo for her latest album release. That night, you’ll be able to get your mitts on the CD before it’s available in stores. Here’s where you can get tickets to the concert. The Thrillionaires will be performing that night, too.
I like what Hailey Smith said on Facebook. “You would just be silly to not come to this.” And she’s right.
Proceeds from the concert will go to benefit the arts in Provo. More specifically, a concert series that’s being put together by Mindy, Courtney, Sarah and myself as part of Provo’s Center Focus efforts. So get your tickets today. I’ll see you August 2nd!

Wow. Last night was amazing. I’m calling it a grand success. It’s hard to know exactly how many people came to our 30 Strangers exhibit but I estimate about 300 – 350 people.
I just can’t say enough how grateful I am for those that came and for those that were part of the project.
A more lengthy description will come soon, complete with photographs from a couple of Provo’s finest photographers that will show how things played out at the exhibit last night.
But for now, if you missed it, you still have some time to see the exhibit. We’ll be open on the following days and times:
July 5 12pm – 8pm
July 6-9 2pm – 5pm
Gallery address – 26 West Center Street – Provo UT
Important note: The 30 Strangers project is a fund raiser for the Center for Women and Children in Crisis. During our exhibit, our fundraiser continues. For a $75 donation to the Center, you can schedule your own mother-daughter portrait session on select days July – October. Come on down to the exhibit to sign up.

Dave is one of my favorite people and also, he’s hilarious. I don’t know about you, but I love to laugh, so I love to be around Dave. Trouble is, he lives in California so we don’t get to see each other very much. In fact, I hadn’t seen him since he’s had kids. Yikes. So I was really happy when he wanted me to photograph his family when he was in Utah for a visit.
Thanks for coming, Dave.

These two look like they could be sisters. They aren’t, though. One of them is the mom. For a fun game, guess which one.
Thanks Meridith, for coming by today.

Kate is headed to New York City for an internship this summer. In the mean time, she came by my studio today with her mother and her two sisters. She digs fashion and big cities, so I think she’ll fit right in when she gets to New York. Good luck out there, and thanks for coming today.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably wondered why Salt Lake Magazine has been looking so good the past three years or so. You can blame it on Heidi. She’s worked in magazine publishing for quite a while, and for the last three years has been art director for Salt Lake Magazine and Utah Bride and Groom. She knows what she’s doing.
I’m so glad she came with her daughter and her mother. We had a great time talking about magazines, friends we have in common, parenting, and how to restore an old home. Thanks so much for coming.

They live in New York and come back to Utah from time to time. I photographed Jared and Vanessa last year, back when they only had one son. Now they’ve got two, so when they came back in town this year, it was time for more photographs. Thanks for coming Jared and Vanessa.

I photographed Lizzie and Spencer one week after they got married. (The session was given to them as a gift from a friend). They were on their way to their wedding party. Thanks for coming, lovebirds.

I haven’t said much about this to anyone, but I figured since she recently posted it on her blog it would be ok to mention. I’m working on a long term documentary project with Stephanie Nielson, photographing her recovery. She is a light. And I am, like millions of others, so inspired by her. It’s a real honor to be able to collaborate on this with her.
Thanks, Stephanie and Christian.

The above image is taken of Stephanie and Christian at the “Y” in Provo, overlooking the city. September 9, 2009.

My goal for a portrait is to give the viewer a sense of what the subject is like. Not just what they look like, but what they’re like to be around. I love to hear a parent say, “Oh, you’ve captured their personality perfectly”. Making a picture like that takes a certain amount of patience and paying attention to the details. A slight change in expression, a little hand gesture. Then, right at the perfect moment, click. So I had a great time with Jenny and her kids, all of them pleasant as can be. Thanks for coming in, Jenny.

Are you like me? Do you look at these pictures and think, “Well now, I’d sure like to be friends with those people”. And if you are friends with them, consider yourself blessed because, as I’ve come to discover, these here are two very charming ladies.
I love my job.

Ashlee came to our 30 Strangers exhibit in July and liked what she saw. She decided she wanted to get her whole family together for the kind of family picture she couldn’t get anywhere else. I photographed the whole family in downtown Provo, just a couple blocks from my studio. We stopped traffic. That’s not hyperbole. I mean traffic actually stopped, because I was in the middle of the road to take that top picture.
