I like these two. Now, take a look at Hilary’s mother, there, and see if you can guess what her job is. If you guessed “chef” you’re wrong. But if you guessed librarian, ding ding ding ding ding ding ding, you’re right! She’s a librarian and she reminds me a little bit of my own mother (who was also a librarian for a while). We took a walk around Provo, not too far from my office and talked about old houses, the importance of showing up on time, and during all that, I made some portraits of this lovely mother and daughter duo.
Meet Hilary and Rebecca.

Garity currently lives in the house where she grew up. She makes and sells jewelry (like that very cool necklace she’s wearing) and she told me she doesn’t like anything traditional. And I told her, thanks so much for coming.

Oh, sure, she lives in Washington, but that doesn’t keep Danyelle from coming to Utah from time to time. In fact, one of the last times she was here she was in one of Mindy Gledhill’s videos. For a fun game, watch it here and see if you can spot her.

And for some additional fun, check out Danyelle’s blog.

Here’s the lovely Amelia. Photographed at my studio in Provo, Utah.

Amelia came in last week to take advantage of our headshot special. We offer headshots all year long, but are offering this special rate during February and March only. If you need a headshot for your blog, now is the time to get it done, so give me a call. I can’t wait to photograph you. 801.916.6993.

Here are some of my favorite portraits that I took in 2010. It’s been a busy year and I had a lot to choose from. There were many that I loved and that could have been included, but here’s the short list. Do you have a favorite?
I’m grateful for everyone that hired me to photograph them this year and I’m looking forward to a fantastic 2011.

Interested in being on this list next year? Let’s talk. 801.916.6993. We’re not just making pictures, we’re making history.
Would you like to see my list from the previous years?

If you didn’t get a chance to see it in July, or if you just didn’t get enough of it and you want to see it again, the 30 Strangers exhibit is now showing at the Provo library’s art gallery. It’s up now and will be there until September 28th. Take the whole family and show ‘em how cultured you are and junk.
In conjunction with the exhibit, on September 23rd, 6pm, I will be giving a presentation at the Provo library about portrait photography. I’m going to talk a little about the project, a little bit about portrait photography in general, and a little bit about how you, yes you, can make great portraits of your own if you’re into that sort of thing. I’ll also be telling a hilarious story about Santa humiliating a 6 year old girl. You don’t want to miss that. I hope to see you there.

It’s no secret that Stephanie Brubaker is a purveyor of all things beautiful. You just need to check out her blog, Stephmodo.com (which thousands do on a daily basis) to see that she has great style. But beyond that, she is smart as a whip, fun, and a great friend.
And she’s pregnant. So instead of photographing the whole family like we did in 2009 and 2008, we decided to mix it up a bit this year and just get some maternity pictures.
Here we go. The lovely Stephanie Brubaker:

Important sidenotes – Four things:
1- Stephanie gets her hair cut from Patrick at Shep Salon. Go there. They are amazing. She got her hair cut just before she came to the studio for this session. She looks amazing.
2- Huge thanks to Diana Palmer from Yan Photography who let me use her studio for this session. She’s in the same building as me (just down the hall!) and her studio was perfect for our intended purpose. Diana is so awesome. Check out her website.
3 – Interested in maternity or family portraits with the people you love? Call me. I’m currently booked until August 23rd and have available after that just for you. A handful of days are open in September and October. It’s not too early to be thinking about that family picture you’ll be sending out with your Christmas card this year. My contact info is here and our portrait pricing is here.
4 – I love my job.

Georgia told her mother-in-law to block out some time on April 30th. Didn’t tell her why because she thought if Ellen knew it was to get her picture taken, she wouldn’t want to come. A couple days before they were supposed to arrive, Georgia did, in fact, tell Ellen that they were going to be photographed. Ellen said, “Oh, is that it? I’m so relieved. I thought we were going for pedicures.”
Meet Georgia and Ellen.

Marta drove to Provo from Idaho Falls, Idaho to be photographed for the 30 Strangers project. I asked Marty about her name and she told me if she could choose her own name it would be Claire. Marta told me, since she and her mother’s names are similar, at home they call her Mini Mart. I love that. Mini Mart. Cute.
A good story: During our portrait session, Marty got a little teary-eyed and said to her daughter, I’m just realizing how beautiful you are.
Well, you are both beautiful and I’d like to thank you for coming.
Now, meet Marta and Marty.

And they are writers. Read Marta’s blog here and read Marty’s blog here.

Delightful, funny, and pleasant. Alison and I laughed and laughed. I love to take pictures and all, but when Alison came, I just wanted to keep talking and asking her questions.
And it turns out our two boys love some of the same vocabulary words. The kind you can’t say in church. (Or at least you hope they don’t).

Sometimes people aren’t sure what to do when they get their picture taken. You know, how to stand, where to put their hands, where to look, if they should smile.
If they ask me if they should smile, I always say the same thing. I say, if you feel a smile coming on, then smile, but don’t fake a smile.
Now let me tell you about Debbie and her daughters. They are natural smilers. They couldn’t help but smile. Sometimes I would say, not just for a second, don’t smile. That would last a frame or two, but slowly, slowly, a gorgeous grin would creep back on their face.
Pure joy. These girls are cheerful. That’s all there is to it.

Tomorrow we begin the 30 Strangers portrait project and fund-raiser. I’m so excited.
Over the next 30 days I’ll photograph people I’ve never met before. Strangers. Every day in April I get to meet someone new and make a portrait of them with someone they love. I just can’t say enough how much I love my job.
I’ll be making updates on the blog as the project moves along.
And now, a quote from Peter London’s book, No More Secondhand Art:
The greatness of a poem or painting in not that it portrays the thing observed or experienced, but that it portrays the artist’s or the poet’s vision cued off by his encounter with the reality. Hence the poem or the painting is unique, original, never to be duplicated.
Good things are about to happen.

Steve and Cindy are going on a mission for the LDS church. Steve will be the mission president for the Missouri mission. That’s a big job. He’s perfect for such things.
They needed a picture of both of them for the Church News and gave me a call. Cindy showed me a sample of what they were looking for. Pretty straight forward. I said, sure, let’s get that picture, but then let’s do something a little more Justin Hackworthy. So this first image is what they need to send to the church, the others are because if you’ve got a few minutes with Steve and Cindy Clark, you might as well take that opportunity to make something special. After all, I won’t get a chance to photograph them for another three years.

Get this. After we sat down for a few minutes to talk so I could get to know the Olson’s, we went in the studio to make some portraits and I turned on the music. I selected Mates of State, the Re-Arrange Us album. The parents stared at me like I was from another planet. Then Dan said, “How did you know this was their favorite band?” These kids love Mates of State? Well now, this is going to be fun.

Seriously, what family wouldn’t want photographs like this? Look at that image #3. That’s one of my favorite portraits I’ve taken in a long time.

I’ve know Brett since we were in Mrs McCullochs class, way back in the third grade. He’s one of the funniest people I know and I steal his jokes on a regular basis, then pass them off as my own. For example, once he sent me a slogan for the city of Orem that went like this: We’re just like Provo, only Norther!
I tell that to people but never let on that Brett said it first.
Brett is a talented actor but has for some time let that talent lie dormant. It’s been hidden under a bushel. That is, until recently. Now, he’s acting again. And for his most recent audition, he needed a headshot. That’s where I come in.
Here you go, Brett. Break a freak’n leg.

Do you think her name is Dolores Thompson or is it Kat Mandeville?

When she said her name was Kat Mandeville, I thought, of course it is. Someone that looks this groovy has to be named Kat Mandeville, or if this is you, and you’re name is something like Dolores Thompson, you’d have to change it to Kat Mandeville.
By the way, Kat’s a writer and keeps a blog here.
