Willie lives in Grand Junction, Colorado. Attorney by day, blue-grass musician by night. Now, I’ve never seen him do any lawyer things. I’m just assuming he’s as good as they get.

But I have heard him sing and play his guitar and when that happens, you get a permanent smile that won’t fade for three days. More sensatives types, you just might cry. The girls swoon. The boys want to go buy their own guitar.

It’s good to know Willie DeFord.

Here’s a sample:

What to photograph

Giving specific advice on what to photograph would not be appreciated even if it was possible. The answer is provided by a question: What are you really interested in? In other words: What is it that can sustain your enthusiasm for a long time?

Well, the cool kids came down to Provo and I got to photograph their little family. That tiny little angel is only four months old. Although I had never met Amber and Chris before, they were referred by my friend Stephanie and went to the U of U with my former house-mate. Small world. Thanks for coming to Provo for your family pictures, guys. Enjoy!

She wants to model. So, you call a make-up artist and a photographer and you put a portfolio together. Not bad for her first photo-shoot. And it’s a lot easier to look slick when you’ve got Amelia doing hair and make-up.

The Nie Nie recovery project

I haven’t said much about this to anyone, but I figured since she recently posted it on her blog it would be ok to mention. I’m working on a long term documentary project with Stephanie Nielson, photographing her recovery. She is a light. And I am, like millions of others, so inspired by her. It’s a real honor to be able to collaborate on this with her.

Thanks, Stephanie and Christian.

Thursday, October 22 at 6pm I’m giving a lecture at BYU-Idaho for their Art Seminar series. I’m going to be telling the story about the first time I kissed a girl (it was during the TV show Family Feud) and about the time a guy was walking around Rexburg without a coat when it was twenty below zero. (I’m going to leave the swear words out of that story. It still works without the swears. I mean, it’s not like I’m giving a lecture to pirates). I’ll also show some of my work and talk about how I got started in photography, why I do it, where it’s taken me, and the photographers that have made an impact on my craft. My goal is that listeners will be both entertained and inspired.

I may even work in the following quote from the book No More Secondhand Art:

The greatness of a poem or a painting is not that it portrays the thing observed or experienced, but that it portrays the artist’s or the poet’s vision cued off by his encounter with reality. Hence the poem or the painting is unique, original, never to be duplicated.

Maybe I’ll see you there.

One of the finest places in Utah to have a wedding is Log Haven. That’s where Tom and Katie decided to get hitched in June. For me, one of the highlights was during the ceremony, Tom’s grandfather recited a poem by Pablo Neruda. Tears all around.

Photography Show Benefits Women’s Shelter

Provo, Utah – June 23, 2009 – How did one photographer and 30 strangers team up to help local victims of domestic violence? Find out when art and activism come together at a downtown Provo gallery on Thursday, July 2. Featuring the work of Justin Hackworth, the “30 Strangers II: Portraits of Mothers & Daughters” exhibit will raise funds for the Center for Women & Children in Crisis.

For the second edition of Hackworth’s 30 Strangers Project, the fine art photographer shot portraits of 30 sets of mothers and daughters, some spanning four generations, over 30 days. In lieu of a sitting fee, each donated $25 to the Center. Hackworth is offering the same arrangement during the show opening, which starts at 6pm at the Knight-Block Building at the corner of University Avenue and Center Street.

Shelter manager Kim Kowallis hopes the show also boosts awareness of the Center’s mission. “I want people to realize how many women and kids we serve,” Kowallis says. The center can’t afford to advertise, and relies instead on word of mouth to reach both potential donors and women in need. “Our shelter is about women who are fleeing domestic violence, who have to just grab their kids and run.”

Kowallis says the exhibit theme suits the Center’s message of hope. “At the shelter, people are in crisis, and life is not good,” she says. “I want them to see mother-daughter relationships that are in a good place. I’m definitely taking some of them to the show, to see how things can be—that things can get better.”

One portrait subject was so excited about the project, she drove to Provo from her home in Denver, Colorado to participate. “Considering the level of Justin’s photography, I would have paid him so much more for these pictures,” says Utah native Rachel Miller. Miller posed with her daughter, mother, and grandmother, who plans to attend the exhibit. “What he did, having us donate instead to the Crisis Center, making this a project to help others, I think it’s amazing.”

Hackworth, whose work has shown at Salt Lake City’s Art Access and Finch Lane galleries, Park City’s Kimball Art Center, and the Springville Art Museum, started the 30 Strangers Project in 2008. “Over 30 days, I shot portraits of 30 people I didn’t know,” Hackworth says. “That experience was fascinating, so I wanted to do it again. But this year, I wanted to focus on a theme that could give something back to the community.”

Allow me to tell you two things I learned at Lizy and Nick’s wedding.

Number one–Mariachi bands should be a regular part of nearly every function where people gather, including church and funerals and those ceremonies where someone is presented with an over-sized check. The mariachi band was my favorite part of her reception. The other thing I learned is this–I want to laugh and smile as often and frequently as Lizy does. (You’ll see what I’m talking about when you view the pictures of her).

And then a third thing I already knew, but was reinforced at her wedding–I love being a wedding photographer. That night, at the reception, as people were having a good time, dancing, laughing, and the sun was setting low, low, so that good light was starting to come in, I stood back for a minute and thought that if I was just driving by and came across this scene, the first thought I’d have is “Hey, look. Happy people dancing and having fun. I want to stop the car and go photograph that.”

Hi. My name is Justin. I am a wedding photographer. And now, Lizy and Nick:

30 Strangers

Here’s a visual summary of our 30 Strangers project from 2009. What’s the 30 Strangers project? Here’s where you can read about this portrait project and fund raiser. And while the photographs have all been taken, we aren’t finished yet. We’re planning an exhibit for July 2nd (more details to follow soon) and I can’t wait. I just got off the phone with Kent Miles who has agreed to help me sequence the show. Kent has had more gallery exhibitions than any other photographer in Utah (solo or group shows) and having his input will make all the difference. It’s all in the details, don’t you know.

Steve Clark is running for the mayor of Provo this fall. Earlier this week he announced his candidacy and today he came by my studio to be photographed. I was really happy to hear about his vision for downtown Provo, especially since my office is in downtown Provo. My favorite part is when he said there would be jet packs for everyone by the year 2015. (Just kidding. He didn’t say anything like that).

The finest place in Utah for weddings gowns is Alta Moda. There’s no secret there. And every so often they have a party for wedding vendors. You know, photographers, florists, DJ’s, divorce lawyers. (Just kidding about the lawyers). So a few days ago I went to their party with my girlfriend who also happens to be my wife. Here’s a picture of us being cute together.

alta-moda

Alta Moda just re-designed their website so you want to check it out here and they even have a few pictures I took of beautiful Lindsay. Their party was great fun and it was good to see all the people I dig, like Melissa, Tim, Jon, Leo, Carol and Cynthia, and I was able to meet three photographers who I’ve been dying to meet–Kate, Rebekah, and Stacy. Good times and fancy cheese. And Micah from the Gatsbys was there handing out his demo CD which Amy and I listened to on the way home and danced a funky dance in the car. Want your next function to be awesome? Hire the Gatsbys. If you came to our Christmas party you might recall that’s who we were lucky enough to have play for us.

Thanks, Hilary for the good times. You are a dream.

Last week we announced our 30 Stranger project coming up in April. I can’t wait. Well, once Gabrielle and Stephanie mentioned it on their blogs, it only took a couple hours to fill all the spots. (Last year when we did it in two days, I thought that was fast–but two hours? Wow. What’s going to happen next year?) And what to do about all those people that still want to participate, but contacted us after the 30 spots were filled? Well, we came up with a great plan and a super deal. If you want to know what it is, email me. That’s what Shelah did, because she knows the value of getting stunning portraits of her and her daughters.

I photographed Blair and Julie Buswell and their fabulous family today, and that was great, great. Blair is a well-known sculptor and I always love photographing other artists. I loved being in their home, seeing Blair’s work, listening to the kids play music, hearing Julie talk to them with so much respect and admiration. I drove away happy, thinking, man, what luck. Here’s a one-minute slideshow of more family pictures.

Quick story: I photographed some friends of mine and they told some of their friends about it. Then those people told their neighbors. Next thing you know, the neighbors (The Buswell’s) call up and say they’d like some family pictures. Turns out, he’s the boss of my wife’s book-club partner’s husband. Can you even believe it. Small world. Also, I’m so happy when people want to tell their friends about my work. It’s so meaningful to me, so thanks. Referrals make the world go around. And love. But mostly referrals.
