Fun facts: Chris is a writer. She’s bright and beautiful. Plus, her husband’s name is also Chris Ross. (They even have the same middle initial). How many people do you know that has the exact same name as their husband. I hope no one with the first name Brenda can make that claim.
Meet Chris Ross.

In other news – If you haven’t had a chance to see the 30 Strangers exhibit a the BYU library, this weekend is your last chance. The show comes down on Monday.
This week I was the guest guest judge on the popular blog I Heart Faces. It’s a resource for new photographers wanting tips and inspiration. Each week they have a theme and invite people to submit an image that goes along with that theme. You can read my interview here and see this week’s winning pictures here.
Tomorrow I’m having a photography workshop at my studio and looking forward to that. It’s the same workshop I gave at Evo Conference earlier this month (beginning SLR photography) and I plan to announce some dates this fall when I’ll repeat this same workshop. Ashley Thalman will be joining me tomorrow to make sure those participants get lots of individual attention.
Next week’s another busy week. I’m photographing a wedding on Friday and throughout the week I’ve got some engagement portraits and some family portraits lined up. Did you just get engaged and you want pictures of you and the one you love? Call me. 801.916.6993. Pricing info for portraits and weddings can be found here.

Turns out, we’re practically neighbors. And I saw Paige’s mom at the last Rooftop Concert. I’ll bet now that I’ve met them and found out we live near each other, I’ll run into them all the time. I sure hope so.

Meaghan, her mom and her grandmother came in to be photographed together. We had a good time. Laughed. Told some stories. And laughed a little more. During some of that time, I was taking pictures.

…..
Have a great weekend! On Saturday I’ll be photographing the wedding of these love birds. What will you be up to?

We’re not just making pictures. We’re making history. Interested in a portrait session of your own? Let’s talk. I’m currently booked until the beginning of August. That’s a perfect month for such things. 801.916.6993

Now here’s a couple people I wish lived in my town. I bet we’d be friends and do stuff together. Right, Scotty and Michaela? They used to live here (I didn’t know them, then) and now they live in Washington D.C. and came to Utah for a family visit.
Here they are, smart and polite, Scotty and Michaela.

What a great way to end the project. With a four generation group from Pocatello, Idaho. When Blanche said she’s been there for 45 years I figured there was a good chance she would have know my grandpa. Do you know Merrill Gee, I asked? Turns out, my grandfather and her husband spent time in a church position together. Turns out, my uncle and Allyn used to cut class together.
Turns out, we spent a great hour together and I felt honored to photograph all of these folks.

Allyn was kind enough to send the following email: Thank you Justin for a wonderful experience on Saturday. We had so much fun and will remember our hour with you for a long time to come. You have a gift not only as a photographer, but as a fun kind person who realizes the importance of making everyone feel valued and of great worth.
Thanks, Allyn. I appreciate you coming here, and the kind words.

Both of them, newlyweds. Well, one year and three years. I call that newlywed. Both of them, photographers. Both, beautiful.

Check that out. Four generations. Just beautiful.
People come to the studio and we shoot for a bit and if I remember, I turn on some music and ask them all to dance and I’ll take pictures of the good times. Oh, sure, most people are hesitant at first, but for the most part, get into after a minute or two as long as I’ve picked the right song. When I mentioned to Stacey’s grandmother that I wanted her to dance, she said, “I’m not going to dance. Not for free!”

I like what Zandra said.
Being adopted, I had never seen anyone that physically resembled me – until my children entered my life. I’m still caught off guard at times when I look at one of them and see replicas of my eyes peering back at me, or my own shy smile debuting on their precious little faces.
Beautiful.

Here’s what Jeanette and I have in common. We both went to Ricks College and we both wrote for the Viking Scroll (student newspaper) while we were there. And now, we both own our own magazine company. Ha ha. Just kidding. I don’t own a magazine company. But Jeanette does. Thanks for coming in, Jeanette.

I told Amy that while we were taking pictures I’d turn on some music and I was going to ask them all to dance. She said her mom used to do some high-kicks. Her mom said, “well, we don’t want any torn muscles. Or pants.”

If you dig quilting (who doesn’t!) then you’ll want to read Amy’s quilting blog.

Marie’s mom, Karen, has eight kids and said, isn’t it good they could talk me into having one more? Marie’s the youngest in the family. Good thing Karen had one more.

Suzanne and I have so much in common. We’re both English majors and cut our own hair. Eden is a accomplished ceramicist. Mary Anne has lived all over the world. That’s just a few of the things I learned when these charming ladies came on Day Six.

Here’s how these things go. People come to my studio and I ask them to sit down for a few minutes and we chat a bit. I ask them questions and then we go take pictures. Sometimes, I wish I could just keep listening to what they have to say. That’s the way it was when Cher came in. I just wanted to keep asking questions. But people are busy and have things to do. I quit asking questions and got to work.

I don’t know how we’ve never met before because Jane and I know lots of the same people. But we’ve met now, and I’m really glad we have because these ladies are lovely, inside and out.

On day two, Stacey bounded in to the studio. She’s into good health, herbs, and exercise, so she brought all kinds of good energy to our studio. She and her daughter were so much fun and now I’m glad we’re no longer strangers. Thanks for coming, ladies.

Well here we go! 30 Strangers 2011 has begun and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
Christa called right at 4, apologizing for being late. When she came up the stairs to the studio, before I even had a chance to say, Hi, I’m Justin, Christa’s sister Brittany said, “We blame being late on my mom”. Turns out they made a quick stop on the way so Judy could pick me up a pie AND flowers for my wife. That’s classy. And that’s the way to kick off the 30 Strangers project.
So, first, we all sat down for a bit and talked. I asked them all some questions about their lives (hopes, dreams, if they knew any good jokes). They had some great stories including one the time the youngest sister Emily thought the car radio was possessed by the devil and even asked to get out of the car (Christa was controlling the radio from the steering wheel) and another great story of the time all three sister were convinced their mom was sending them all to fat camp but instead she was sending them to this.
Then I made some pictures. Laughing, dancing, tears (the mom’s–she loves those girls), more laughter. This was a perfect beginning to this month-long project.

Here are some of my favorite portraits that I took in 2010. It’s been a busy year and I had a lot to choose from. There were many that I loved and that could have been included, but here’s the short list. Do you have a favorite?
I’m grateful for everyone that hired me to photograph them this year and I’m looking forward to a fantastic 2011.

Interested in being on this list next year? Let’s talk. 801.916.6993. We’re not just making pictures, we’re making history.

Lara Casey is editor of Southern Weddings Magazine and was in Salt Lake City for the WedSmith convention in September. (I’ll post pictures of the convention very soon).
Here’s the deal. Lara is a remarkable person. She has that rare gift, that ability to make everyone she meets feel like a million damn dollars. By the time she left town I felt like we were best friends and I’ll bet everyone she talked to at WedSmith felt the same way.
I’m so impressed with Lara Casey. Three cheers for Lara Casey. Wait, no. Four cheers. Four cheers for Lara Casey. My new best friend.

Well, well, well. Look who’s getting hitched. Annie and Brendan.
Annie was one of our interns earlier this year and I just can’t say enough about how much she lit the place up whenever she came to work. She’s just about as cute as can be (you can see that for yourself) and also has a great sense of style.
Congratulations, Annie and Brendan. And thanks, Annie, for all you have done for Justin Hackworth Photography.

Here’s what I’ve been up to this week, or, links up the ying-yang.
Met with Courtney Kendrick (you probably know her as CJane), Sue Bradford, and Sarah Wiley yesterday about the Rooftop concert series coming up in Provo (on a roof!). It’s coming together. You’ll hear more about this very soon.
Helped Mindy Gledhill move a 700 pound piano to her office then took some pictures of her playing that very piano.
Slept in a tent last night in the backyard with my boys. It’s a trial run for this weekend.
Getting ready to head to New York City next week to photograph the BlogHer convention and Trevor Christensen is coming to shoot it with me.
Invited Jaimie to my office yesterday to view her wedding pictures.
Enjoying the crud out of my new phone.
Georgia brought me a newspaper article in the Daily Universe about the 30 Strangers exhibit that took place earlier this month.
Lucky me, Nat the Fat Rat came to say hello! I can’t get over what a joy she is.
Working on my life creed with help from Leo Weidner.
Did some test printing with a new photo lab – ProDPI – that I’ve been meaning to try. I think I may have found a new lab.

Who said you have to live in Utah to be photographed by Justin Hackworth? Whoever said that should wash their mouth out with soap. Because you don’t have to live in Utah to get your family pictures from me. I’ll come to you (I hope you live in Italy) or you can come to me. That’s what Stephanie did. She and her family live in Oregon and just happened to be in town for this, that, and the other and included on the list, a stop at my studio.

Who said your wedding photography needs to take place on your wedding day? Oh, sure that might be ideal, but there’s nothing wrong with getting some of those forgotten pictures after the fact. That’s what Maren did. There were a few important pictures she felt she didn’t get from her photographer on the day of the wedding so she called me to fill in the gaps.

Maren and Nate were photographed at Huber Grove in Wasatch Mountain State Park.

It’s no secret that Stephanie Brubaker is a purveyor of all things beautiful. You just need to check out her blog, Stephmodo.com (which thousands do on a daily basis) to see that she has great style. But beyond that, she is smart as a whip, fun, and a great friend.
And she’s pregnant. So instead of photographing the whole family like we did in 2009 and 2008, we decided to mix it up a bit this year and just get some maternity pictures.
Here we go. The lovely Stephanie Brubaker:

Important sidenotes – Four things:
1- Stephanie gets her hair cut from Patrick at Shep Salon. Go there. They are amazing. She got her hair cut just before she came to the studio for this session. She looks amazing.
2- Huge thanks to Diana Palmer from Yan Photography who let me use her studio for this session. She’s in the same building as me (just down the hall!) and her studio was perfect for our intended purpose. Diana is so awesome. Check out her website.
3 – Interested in maternity or family portraits with the people you love? Call me. I’m currently booked until August 23rd and have available after that just for you. A handful of days are open in September and October. It’s not too early to be thinking about that family picture you’ll be sending out with your Christmas card this year. My contact info is here and our portrait pricing is here.
4 – I love my job.
