Park City wedding photography – Jen and Ben

by justin on November 1, 2011

in Weddings

I love Park City in the fall. Actually, I love Park City any time, but the fall is particularly pleasant. So, I was happy to be there for Jen and Ben’s wedding at The Canyons. Having your wedding at the Red Pine Lodge is a grand experience. To get there, you and all your guests take a 15 minute gondola ride to the top of the mountain, well above 8,000 feet. So, high up in the mountains where the air is crisp and cool, Ben and Jen tied the knot. Gorgeous. Just gorgeous.

Meet Ben and Jen.

Alta Utah wedding photography

by justin on October 29, 2011

in Weddings

The Alta Lodge is such a great place to have a wedding. I’ve photographed a few up there, and always so happy to be able to do so.

Now here’s a sweet story: Aimie, the bride, her bridesmaids and her mother were all getting reading before the wedding and having a good time. Make-up, hair, you know the drill. Someone came in the room with a gift for Aimie. It was a beautiful necklace from Matt, her soon to be husband, accompanied with a note that said, “To my beautiful bride on our wedding day. I can’t wait to see you at the altar.”

Their wedding took place in Manti, Utah on a day in April that could have been mistaken for December. But just about the time we were going to take group pictures out front, what do you know, the sun came out and the snow stopped. But just for a bit. Then the snow started again. But just for a bit. Kind of crazy.

Our wedding giveaway winner!

by justin on February 28, 2011

in Weddings

First, let me say a huge thanks to Nie Nie for hosting our wedding giveaway on her blog. That’s the first thing that must be said. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

And now we have a winner. It’s Ashley Witt who had this to say about winning.

So this morning I wake up and grab my phone to check the time and see my mom left two messages. I call her back instantly because her messages were very loud and in both she just said “CALL ME!!!!.” I was a little freaked out so I proceeded to phone her and all she said was -you won, you won- and I was like what the heck did I win.  I completely forgot that I even entered anything becuase I will still slightly sleeping.  I thought for a second and thought that she was kidding.  She said she was looking at Stephanies blog this morning and not expecting anything saw our names as the winners.  She instantly starting screaming “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!” I guess she was screaming so loudly saying this that she woke up my Step Dad Kevin and he was under the impression that she won the lottery or even better, payed off her morgage! haha little did he know that it was something completely different but equally as special and that was that I won Justin Hackworth’s skills and talent for the most important day of my life.  I am still emotional about this since I have never even won something as puney a scratcher ticket.  I do  believe that my Great Grandma Annella was channeling in from the heavens rubbing her good luck off on me.  Grams was an insperation to everyone and this is her way of saying she is happy for us and wishes she was here. Thank you soooo soooo much again for chosing us, this makes us feel so special and you will not be disapointed for it is going to be a magical night!!!!

Congratulations, Ashley. I’m so excited for your wedding.

I’ve got to say, this was a really fun contest for me to host. We had so many people that wrote and shared their love stories with us. Amy and I read every word of every email. I started to makes notes of some re0ccuring themes that I was seeing over and over. Then I deleted those notes by mistake. (Oh, brother). The biggie was timing. That kept coming up over and over. Timing was such an essential element to so many people’s story. Lots of people had just come out of a bad relationship when they met their fiance. Lots of people had know their fiance in high school but nothing really started to light up until they met at a party during college (or something like that). Timing. It’s all about the timing.

The other thing that stood out (and this is going to seem obvious) is that everyone wrote told me about how excited they are about their upcoming wedding, and how excited they are to spend the rest of their life with the one they love. It was beautiful. Email after email of people talking about happiness, bliss, and love. I couldn’t help but smile.

Utah wedding photography – Provo

by justin on December 15, 2010

in Weddings

Annie and I went to plenty of weddings this year together. She did a bang-up job as an intern at Justin Hackworth Photography and we were sad when her time here ended. And let me tell you what–this girl has style. So, when it came time for her own wedding, I just knew it was going to be one of the good ones. The food was amazing (I’ll admit, I ate some egg rolls and a couple of those cheese cake bites), the music was great, there were so many well thought out details, the wedding pictures weren’t too shabby (if I do say so myself) and of course, Annie was a gorgeous bride. A happy day, to be sure.

And now, meet Annie and Brendan.

Brett and Maren got married on October 2nd in Bountiful, Utah. It was one of the most lovely fall days I can remember.

I’ve known Brett since 3rd grade. We were both in Mrs. McCulloch’s class. We both played football together in Jr. High. Yes, I played football. What’s so funny about that? And then, friends in high school, college, and later years.

So now, a wedding. Love and bliss, kissing, dancing, and all that. What a great honor it was to be the photographer at one of my great friend’s happy day.

Salt Lake City wedding – Jared + Jessica

by justin on August 25, 2010

in Weddings

Jessica and Jared got married in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Point just above the campus of the University of Utah. They’ve known each other since high school (he was in love with her/she had a different boyfriend), but they didn’t start getting all lovey-dovey until a few years after that.

But get this: One day Jessica’s mom asked what Jared’s last name was. Jessica said it was Bybee. Jessica’s mom was a little bit in shock. See, a few years earlier, Jared’s father, a brain surgeon, saved Jessica’s dad’s life when he was rushed to the hospital with some trouble with his brain. Now, their kids are married.

We have our winner for our third engagement session giveaway. It’s Natalie, who entered for her cousin. She said they just got engaged last week. Ahhhh, young love. On Monday, we’ll post our 4th and final engagement session giveaway. I hope you win. I really do.

But even if you don’t win and you’re getting engaged, you’d still be wise to hire me to shoot your engagement pictures and photograph your wedding. Of course I’ll tell you that, but here’s what others have to say about it. Here are two emails I got last night. These arrived 20 minutes apart.

Here’s the first one:
These pictures are amazing. I am in love with every single one! Thank you doesn’t even begin. I feel so very blessed to have had the opportunity to meet you and to have pictures done. You just can’t imagine what it means to me. Really, thank you.

Then, twenty minutes later:
I met you last year again at the Grand America Bridal Show. I can’t tell you how much I regret not hiring you to be our photographer. But that’s a story for another day.

There’s a pattern here. People that hire me are over-the-moon happy they did so. People that didn’t hire me later regret that decision. It’s your wedding day, after all. You deserve fantastic photography. So call me. I’d love to hear about your wedding and find out how I can provide you with beautiful wedding photographs–the kind you’ll actually want to show off to your friends, not hide away in a box. Believe me. You won’t regret it.

Ashley and Kent got married at the Salt Lake temple. One of the warmest days in February I can think of. A beautiful day. Their luncheon took place at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building where family members told embarrassing and sweet stories about the bride and groom. Mostly embarrassing though. Later that night, friends and family gathered for a wedding celebration at Noah’s in Sandy. It was, on all accounts, a lovely affair.

There’s going to be a wedding

in Engagements

I don’t know how long I’ve known Jamie. A year, for sure. Maybe two. And I think every day she gets more pleasant and lovely. So I had a great afternoon, photographing her and Aaron for their engagement pictures. We took these pictures in Provo, but the wedding next month will be in Salt Lake. Oh, man, it’s going to be a lovely affair. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Conley family knows how to throw a party.

Fun fact: I photographed Jaimie’s sister Lindsay for her bridal portraits last year as well as her wedding.

I wish this family had more daughters. Is that ok to say?

And now, meet Jamie and Aaron, soon to be wed.

30 Strangers – Day Twenty-Two

by justin on April 22, 2010

in 30 Strangers-2010

People come to my studio to be photographed. First, I invite them to sit on the sofa and we talk for a bit. I want to know a little more about them. So in comes Camille with her mother, sister, and grandmother. We chat for a while and then go next door to the studio.

I was in the corner getting the right lens and Camille’s grandmother walks over to me, away from the others, and whispers, “This family is crazy!” Well, whether or not that’s true, there’s nothing wrong with that, if you ask me. Crazy people will dance.

Raise the roof, ladies.

Logan Utah Wedding – Brandon + Emily

by justin on March 25, 2010

in Weddings

Emily and Brandon had a party in Mapleton the night before they got married. The next day everyone drove to Cache Valley for their wedding at the LDS Temple in Logan, Utah. You just never know what kind of weather you’re going to get in Logan in February, but it turned about to be about as pleasant a day as you could hope for.

Then, lunch at Hamiltons. That place is great. I’d go back there in a heartbeat.

And now, Emily and Brandon, in love.

Yesterday Amy and I spent some time going through all of the weddings and portrait sessions I’ve done over the last year. The purpose is to get some new display prints in my office. Freshen things up a bit. Springtime. Newness. All of that, see. And it was so great to go back and see some of my favorite wedding and portrait pictures from the last few months. And it was fun to discover some new favorites that I just hadn’t seen the first time around.

Back when I shot film, I loved busting out the contact sheets from the previous years and seeing if there was an undiscovered gem that I hadn’t found before. Like a little treasure hunt. You go back with fresh eyes, and maybe the emotion you felt when taking the pictures has faded a little, so you’re looking at the images with a new perspective.

One of my favorite photographers, Gary Winnogrand, used to wait a full year before he developed his film for this very reason. He would shoot the film and set it aside for one year before he even developed it! I could never do that. I’m too impatient. But for him, looking at them too soon clouded his ability to select the strongest images based on the image itself, not on how he felt at the time he made the picture.

So for me, what I’ve discovered, is that some of the pictures I respond to initially are the same pictures I respond to a year later. And yet, there are some surprises when you find a really great picture that you really didn’t notice the first time around. And I like that feeling. Like when you find a 20 dollar bill in some pants you haven’t worn in a month.

So, if you care to spend five minutes, this slideshow is a portfolio of my images from the past year that I find compelling. (There might be a handful that fall outside that one year range). Enjoy.

Grace and Dave have style. I knew that when I met Grace last year but it was confirmed when they sent a wooden wedding invitation. Very cool. That’s one invitation I’m keeping.

On a chilly November morning, Dave and Grace got married in the Salt Lake Temple then walked a couple blocks to their luncheon at the Alta Club, a place where Grace’s great grandfather was once president. And that evening, their party at Sundance. Good times and a cheese plate. Man, I love my job.

How to photograph a photographer

by justin on June 24, 2009

in Photographers

Here’s what I like. I like it when I talk to other portrait and wedding photographers and ask them questions about how they do their thing, and they are completely forthright about what they are up to and how they run their business. There’s no worrying that if I know where they get their albums or prints made that I’ll somehow steal away business or try to copy what they are doing. Nope. Instead, they know it’s just an exchange of info from two people trying to make good decisions about how to provide the best service to our clients.

And I find that the people that are the most open about such things are the photographers that are the most competent and they realize that there’s enough work for everyone and we’re all on the same team anyway. In this town, I’ve felt that good vibe from Kent Miles, Jon Canlas, Tim Uhl, Melissa Kelsey, Dustin Izatt (dude let me borrow his camera!), Hailey Warner and Ashley Thalman. I’m happy I know these people.

And most recently, Stacy Young. I stopped by her studio in Salt Lake a couple weeks ago and she showed me how she does her thing. It was very gracious, and to Stacy, I say, thanks. Then, last week, she came to see me. (I love visitors!) I couldn’t resist taking her picture. Hey man, it’s what I do.

So now, here’s the lovely Stacy.

Utah photographer

Utah portrait photography

Provo portrait photography

Thanks for coming, Stacy. Come back soon. You left your purse.

Just kidding. You didn’t leave your purse. But do come back soon.

Side note: Last month two photographers contacted me within one week of each other and asked me about my online ordering system. I use Instaproofs. They wanted to know the ins and outs and what I thought about it. One of the photographers is a very well known and over the top talented photographer from California –I was flattered he emailed me– and the other photographer, from what I could tell, was a fellow just starting out and had all kinds of questions. I took plenty of time to answer their questions and let them know why I like using Instaproofs. Why did I take all that time instead of letting them just figure it out on their own? I did it because that’s what Jon Canlas did when I called him a couple years ago and asked the same thing and I’ve always appreciated that. And the other reason is because, why not? Why not help a guy out? And one of these days, I just may have a question for those people, and I’ll be glad to have them answer whatever it is I want to know.

One more side note to an already overly long post: Here are some other portraits I’ve done of photographers that have come by my studio within the last year .

Provo portraits – Sammy

I love it when people stop by to say hello, just like Sammy did earlier today. And I just happened to have my camera with me and couldn’t pass up the chance to make some picutres of her. Sammy is a great painter and it was good to hear what she’s up to.

Lisa and Greg got married in Salt Lake City at the Point in February. It was lovely as can be and I was happy to be there.

What luck. Justin Lyon is in town to for the Sundance Film Festilval and had a couple photo shoots just down the block from my office. So he stopped by to say hello. Justin seems like the happiest person I know. I can’t imagine that he’s ever frowned or been sad.

Justin and his lovely wife Amelia are wedding photographers in Southern California and making a big splash in their neck of the woods. Everyone loves Amelia and Justin. Cheers, Justin. Thanks for coming by. You’re welcome here any time.
