Today is our first Rooftop Concert of the year and I’m so excited. I’m so happy to be one of the founders and organizers and love being involved (and I love being the official photographer for all the concerts). My kids are excited to go, too. I think they just like it because we take treats.
I had a wedding giveaway on Nie Nie’s blog a couple weeks ago and I’m happy to say we selected a winner and I can’t wait to photograph the wedding in September. It’s going to be amazing. As a way to say thanks, we also sent out special offers to everyone that entered but didn’t win the main give-away.
The 30 Strangers project begins in June. Amy and I read every entry and I have to say, it’s nearly impossible to pick only thirty from such a fantastic list of options. So many people had beautiful stories or compelling reasons for us to choose them. But, there’s only 30 spots so we have to say no to so many people. That’s probably the only downside to doing this project. In any case, we selected our thirty and yesterday I sent out email invitations to those that we selected. Now, I just wait to hear back from them to confirm their assigned day and time will work for them. I just sent the emails yesterday and have heard back from over half of them. I can’t wait to start the project again, and reading through those emails got me all excited for all the strangers that will soon become friends.
Have you heard about Alt Design Summit? It’s a blogging conference each year in January held in Salt Lake City. Well, the smart people that cooked up that idea came up with the idea to have some of those Alt presenters teach classes online. So you can enjoy all that bloggy goodness year-round. I’ve been teaching some photography classes and it’s been so much fun. I’m teaching one again this month. You can read about that and all the other classes here. And they’re only 15 bucks!
Are you getting married and looking for authentic wedding photographs that just might move you to happy tears? Let’s talk. I still have some days available this summer and fall. 801.916.6993.

Claire is getting married this week in Salt Lake. She came in to the studio last week for her bridal portrait session. She brought along her mother and we all had a good time together. After I took some pictures in my studio, we went to a park on the West side of Provo. At this time of year, the grass is dead and brown all over town, but for some reason, I found a small patch of very green grass and it just happened to be in the exact spot where I wanted to photograph Claire–right there where that low-setting sun was poking through the trees a bit.
I’m really looking forward to the wedding.
Now, here’s Claire.

Well now, who said you have to get your bridal pictures taken before your wedding? Michelle and Scot came in a week after they got married. It just give you an extra day to wear that dress.

Michelle’s bridal pictures were taken in my studio as well as Provo Canyon.

Noelle and Kevin got married at Sundance last month on a gorgeous Saturday morning. A small and beautiful affair with family and a handful of friends. I was so happy to be there to photograph the happy day because Noelle and Kevin are about as charming as can be, and Sundance is such a beautiful place for a wedding.
Meet Noelle and Kevin.

It’s that time of year, lots of weddings. I just returned from photographing two weddings on back to back Saturdays in Idaho and this Friday I’m on my way to photograph a wedding in Temecula, CA, then back to Utah for a wedding in Provo. I love this part of the year (love is in the air) and I love to shoot weddings. Planning one of your own and photography is a priority for you? Let’s talk.
A little bit of rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of Kellee and Harold on their wedding day. They got married in the Salt Lake Temple and had a beautiful backyard reception at her parents house in Provo. Oh sure, it sprinkled some, but if you ask me, it was a perfect day.
And now, meet Kellee and Harold.

Rain or shine, Justin Hackworth photographs happy people and beautiful events and he wants to photograph you.
They’re funny and fun and sarcastic, they love to kiss each other and laugh together. And they’re getting married next month in Salt Lake. I’ll be there to photograph the happy day.
Meet Laura and Austin.

Embarrassing moment- I called her Lauren (it’s Laura) at least twice. Maybe three times. Oh, brother.

Want pictures like this for you and the one you love? Let’s talk. I promise to call you the right name 80% of the time or more.
Planning a wedding has been a real hitch in the get-along since Jordan’s in the Marines’s and doesn’t know when and where he’ll be stationed. But they’re getting married. That much they do know. So we took some engagement pictures in Provo on one of those rare April days when you didn’t need a ski parka to keep warm outside.
They’ve known each other since high school, and now they’re getting married. Meet Kiersten and Jordan.

Valentines Day is coming up. Love is in the air.
And I think you’re going to want to take a look at something on Stephanie’s blog.

Aimie and Mathew are getting married at Alta this summer. So you might be asking yourself how they met. Fun story. They are both studying engineering in Austin, Texas and both were teacher’s assistants for the same class. Glances, giggles, flirting…you know how it goes. Next thing you know, there’s some chemistry in the engineering department.
So now there are some things to do before the wedding. One of those things is to get engagement pictures taken. We met downtown Salt Lake when they were both in town for Christmas. It was so much fun, we didn’t even get cold. Well, I didn’t.
Now, meet Aimie and Matt.

Fun fact: I love to photograph weddings at Sundance. So I was happy to be with Roisin and David on their wedding day because that’s exactly where they got married.
It was an intimate event with only and handful of family members. And I dare you to show me a more perfect day. I just don’t think you could do it.

Nearly every one of the guests came from out of state to be with Sarah and Patrick on their wedding day. The night before the wedding, friends and family drove up Provo Canyon and gathered on the lawn at Sundance for a barbecue (I still dream of the Mango sauce on that chicken, yum yum). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, having a wedding at Sundance is a smart move.
So, let’s start with photographs of the night before the wedding.

The following day, love was in the air. Meet Sarah and Patrick.

Justin Hackworth Photography – We’re not just making pictures. We’re making history.
Brett and Maren got married on October 2nd in Bountiful, Utah. It was one of the most lovely fall days I can remember.
I’ve known Brett since 3rd grade. We were both in Mrs. McCulloch’s class. We both played football together in Jr. High. Yes, I played football. What’s so funny about that? And then, friends in high school, college, and later years.
So now, a wedding. Love and bliss, kissing, dancing, and all that. What a great honor it was to be the photographer at one of my great friend’s happy day.

Morgan and Mathew got married in Spring City, Utah. So then the next thing you might be asking is, Where the heck is Spring City? Easy answer: It’s on the way to Manti.
The next question you might be asking is, was there any square dancing? And as a matter of fact, there was. After their ceremony in a church that’s older than nearly any building in Utah, the wedding party headed to a boys ranch/artist’s retreat for a lovely meal catered by Vanity Fare.
And then you might be asking, well that sounds fun and all, but was there any shot-gun shooting? And that’s exactly what happened next. After all the allemandes and the promenades and what have you, we all walked to a nearby field and wedding guests took turns blasting the crap out of clay pigeons. I, for one, suggest we add after-wedding shotgun shooting to the annuls of wedding traditions.
And now, meet Morgan and Mathew.

I like the way the Mattingly’s throw a wedding party. Bright, colorful, fun with plenty of attention paid to getting the details just so. Richard and Whitney got married this summer in the Salt Lake temple and had their reception in Whitney’s parents backyard. Perfectly charming.

It was bright, sunny, and chilly at the end of May when Maya and John got married in Park City, Utah at the Park Meadows Country Club. One of the best parts of the day is when Maya’s godfather made a great speech and presented Maya with a necklace that was his grandmother’s from Germany. He said it was the oldest piece of jewelry in the family. (Man, I hope I have those details right). In any case, it was a beautiful detail, thoughtful and touching, and just one of the reasons why I love to photograph weddings.
And now, meet Maya and John on their wedding day.

Here’s what I’ve been up to this week, or, links up the ying-yang.
Met with Courtney Kendrick (you probably know her as CJane), Sue Bradford, and Sarah Wiley yesterday about the Rooftop concert series coming up in Provo (on a roof!). It’s coming together. You’ll hear more about this very soon.
Helped Mindy Gledhill move a 700 pound piano to her office then took some pictures of her playing that very piano.
Slept in a tent last night in the backyard with my boys. It’s a trial run for this weekend.
Getting ready to head to New York City next week to photograph the BlogHer convention and Trevor Christensen is coming to shoot it with me.
Invited Jaimie to my office yesterday to view her wedding pictures.
Enjoying the crud out of my new phone.
Georgia brought me a newspaper article in the Daily Universe about the 30 Strangers exhibit that took place earlier this month.
Lucky me, Nat the Fat Rat came to say hello! I can’t get over what a joy she is.
Working on my life creed with help from Leo Weidner.
Did some test printing with a new photo lab – ProDPI – that I’ve been meaning to try. I think I may have found a new lab.
Well, the good news is I’ll be in New York photographing the BlogHer convention in August and I’m really looking forward to that. The bad news is that I won’t get to photograph Brooke and Kevin’s wedding in San Diego because it’s at the same time as the convention. But the good news is that I still got to photograph them for their engagement pictures. And the bad news is–wait, there’s no more bad news. That’s it.
And now, meet Brooke and Kevin.

Britt lives in Logan, Utah. I met her for the first time a few weeks ago when she came to the 30 Strangers exhibit. Her sister Alison was one of the strangers (day 14) so they all came to check it out.
And now Britt’s getting married. First step, bridal portraits. After we talked for a little while at the studio, we walked around downtown Provo just to see what we could see and to be open to the possibilities and the idea of chance in art.
Meet Britt.

Who said your wedding photography needs to take place on your wedding day? Oh, sure that might be ideal, but there’s nothing wrong with getting some of those forgotten pictures after the fact. That’s what Maren did. There were a few important pictures she felt she didn’t get from her photographer on the day of the wedding so she called me to fill in the gaps.

Maren and Nate were photographed at Huber Grove in Wasatch Mountain State Park.

Jamie is getting married in Salt Lake today and I’m looking forward to photographing the big day. Last week we had a good time with her mother and two sisters and cousin taking her bridal portraits in Provo.
Side note: Now, when you look at these pictures, you might find yourself saying, where on earth did she get that fabulous dress? Paris? New York? Did she make a pact with the devil to get a dress so stunning? Nice guesses, but nope. She got it at Alta Moda in Salt Lake. And if you are getting married, you’ll never stop thanking me for telling you about Alta Moda, if you go there, too.
And now, the lovely miss Conley:

And the support team:

It all started with the cupcakes. Rachel and a friend had a contest to see who could make the best cupcakes. They invited the neighbors over to be judges. Matt liked the cupcakes, but he liked Rachel even more. Now they’re engaged to be married.

On one of the best days in May, Rebecca and Jason got married in the Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City. She looked beautiful, he looked handsome–all of that. But my favorite part of the wedding day was later that evening at the reception. Rebecca’s sister had written a song about them and sang it that night. So that was moving and wonderful and if she’s smart, she’ll record that sucker. And then Rebecca sang a song she had written for Jason. And you better believe she had some of those folks in tears. A perfect day.

Here’s our fourth engagement session giveaway. If you’ve entered before you can enter again. Leave a comment on this blog post and we’ll announce our winner on Saturday. Good luck, love-birds.

We have our winner for our third engagement session giveaway. It’s Natalie, who entered for her cousin. She said they just got engaged last week. Ahhhh, young love. On Monday, we’ll post our 4th and final engagement session giveaway. I hope you win. I really do.
But even if you don’t win and you’re getting engaged, you’d still be wise to hire me to shoot your engagement pictures and photograph your wedding. Of course I’ll tell you that, but here’s what others have to say about it. Here are two emails I got last night. These arrived 20 minutes apart.
Here’s the first one:
These pictures are amazing. I am in love with every single one! Thank you doesn’t even begin. I feel so very blessed to have had the opportunity to meet you and to have pictures done. You just can’t imagine what it means to me. Really, thank you.
Then, twenty minutes later:
I met you last year again at the Grand America Bridal Show. I can’t tell you how much I regret not hiring you to be our photographer. But that’s a story for another day.
There’s a pattern here. People that hire me are over-the-moon happy they did so. People that didn’t hire me later regret that decision. It’s your wedding day, after all. You deserve fantastic photography. So call me. I’d love to hear about your wedding and find out how I can provide you with beautiful wedding photographs–the kind you’ll actually want to show off to your friends, not hide away in a box. Believe me. You won’t regret it.

We’re giving away engagement sessions all month. Here’s number two. Leave a comment and we’ll randomly select the winner on Saturday morning (May 22nd). Good luck!

We announced that we’d be giving away a free engagement session each Monday in May. Congratulations to Cody who is our first winner. You’re a winner, Cody, so don’t ever let anyone tell you different.
An update: I’m on vacation right now and so Monday I didn’t make another engagement session give-away post so we’ll do a make-up post in June. Still, plenty of chances to win. The next engagement session give-away post will be on May 17th! Stay tuned for that.
And now, vacation pictures.

I don’t know how long I’ve known Jamie. A year, for sure. Maybe two. And I think every day she gets more pleasant and lovely. So I had a great afternoon, photographing her and Aaron for their engagement pictures. We took these pictures in Provo, but the wedding next month will be in Salt Lake. Oh, man, it’s going to be a lovely affair. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Conley family knows how to throw a party.
Fun fact: I photographed Jaimie’s sister Lindsay for her bridal portraits last year as well as her wedding.
I wish this family had more daughters. Is that ok to say?
And now, meet Jamie and Aaron, soon to be wed.

We’ve never done this before, but we love to try new things. So here goes. Every Monday in the month of May, we’ll give away an engagement session and two 8×10 prints. That’s a $340 value. Cha-ching.
Here’s how it works. Leave a comment on this blog post by Thursday, May 6th at midnight and on Friday morning we’ll pick a winner at random. If you don’t win this time, don’t cry, you’ll have three more chances.
The fine print: This is for an engagement session, which means, you have to be engaged. Seems obvious, but people do crazy things for free stuff. I will be checking to see if you have a marriage license. Ha ha ha. Just kidding. I won’t check. I’ll just trust you.
Sessions can take place in either Salt Lake or Provo, or the surrounding areas.
Can’t wait to meet you, lovebirds.

In January Wendy moved from Massechusettes to Bountiful, Utah. One difference, she says, is that in Utah people don’t look at her like a crazy person for having such a “huge” family. She has four kids. Three boys and this little angel. Meet Wendy and her daughter.

I’m very excited to announce a photography project for the brides of 2010. If you’re getting married, or you know someone who is, may I have your attention, please? I have an announcement.
It’s called Love’s First Year, my latest photography project. I love to photograph weddings. I love recording authentic moments as they unfold. What I really love about this, and the thing that compels me to be a photographer, is the chance to record history. Record life. This project is about making those kinds of images I love, and creating a record of your happy beginning.
For the next 10 brides who choose Justin Hackworth Photography, I will photograph you and your spouse five times over the course of your first year. Think about the moments that will mark your first year of marriage–time at home, time with friends, out on the town–and imagine having stunning images of those events. At the end of your blissful first year, you’ll receive a fine art book with images from your five sessions. I dare say it may become a family treasure.
And the news keeps getting better. If you’re one of the next ten brides, not only will you have professional photos that document your life together, but Love’s First Year is included in your wedding package.
