On a beautiful day in June, Laura and Austin got married in Salt Lake City. Later that night in a friend’s backyard, they had their wedding reception that was packed with lovely details, beautiful people, delicious food and dancing.

Here they are, funny and fun, Laura and Austin.

Provo Wedding Photography – Marin + Drew

by justin on August 1, 2011

in Weddings

Marin and Drew got married in Alabama and then had a lovely reception in Provo. Here are photographs from their wedding reception. But first, a quick side-note. I photographed Drew’s (the groom) brother’s wedding a while ago. I’d link to it on this blog, but it was in 2003 and I didn’t have a blog then. I’m talking about Amanda and Cubby. Amanda’s not only a great photographer and one of my favorites, but she’s also a florist along with her twin sister Chealsea, who is an amazing painter. They did the flowers for Marin and Drew. Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap. Great job, Amanda and Chelsea.

And now, meet Marin and Drew.

How to plan a wedding

Last week we gathered the finest wedding professionals this side of the Mississippi and put on a fancy party for recently engaged girls. We called it Blushing and it turned out to be a smashing success.

The idea (all Amy’s) was sort of an anti-bridal fair. We wanted to create something that was, above all, swanky and fun, where girls that are planning a wedding could come relax, have a good time, eat good food, hear good music, and talk to the best wedding vendors around.

So that’s just what we did and everyone had a great time and we were so pleased with how things played out. The next morning one girl sent an email that said, “I just wanted to thank you again for the event last night, I was basically on cloud nine to say the least, it was a great event that got all my creative juices pumping!!! I look forward to getting to know you in the future!”

Another girl wrote and said, “I wanted to say thank you for putting on such a WONDERFUL event. The evening was beautiful. Honestly, it is the best bridal event I have attended thus far. Blushing was very classy and you catered to what a bride really needs. The bridal events I have attended in the past have been very loud and overwhelming, but Blushing was perfect. It was calm, great music, personable vendors that you could tell really wanted to get to know you. I just wanted to let you know that you did a fantastic job of creating such a lovely event. It was a real treat to attend.” That’s just the sort of response we were hoping for.

Of course Amy and I can’t take all the credit. This was a team effort that just would not have happened without Mood Events who took our idea and made it 100 times better. Not only did Matt, Garrett and Alfreda think of every detail to make certain this was a night we’d all remember, but they are so easy and pleasant to work with. I want to do another party like this, just so I can hang out with them some more. I give them my highest recommendation.

We had live music from the very smooth, very talented Nik Day and the food (oh my, deep breath) the food was provided by The Catering Company. It was so fancy, I didn’t even know what any of it was. (When it comes to food, I’m a bit of a dilettante). There was something with goat cheese, though. I know that. And I ginger-mint drink that made me want someone to hook me up to an IV with that stuff.

Honestly, the party wouldn’t have been as fun or worthwhile without the rest of the vendors. Here’s the list of those that were involved:

Featuring:
Alta Moda Bridal – Wowed everyone with a sample gown
The Catering Company – Still dreaming about their food
Dippidee – Served wedding cake at he end of the night
The Flower Basket Botique – Provided all the flowers and they were gorgeous
Velour Live Music Gallery – A perfect location for our party
Seraph Stationery – Made the letterpress invitations the girls received.
Mood Events and Production – Genius.
Nik Day Music – The secret ingredient to any party
Versa Artistry – Provided girls with a lip bar, kissy, kissy
John Beesley Goldsmith – Gave every bride pearl earings
Justin Hackworth Photography – That’s me!

Garrett, Alfreda, Matt from Mood Events with Amy and I.

Not only did the girls walk away with a gift bag their roomates were sure to covet, but we had give-aways throughout the night with very cool prizes from each vendor.

Amy and I had such a great time that night and we went home that night feeling so good about it.

Thanks to all the girls that came. It was wonderful to meet you.

Thanks to Utah Bride and Groom, Utah Bride Blog, Southern Weddings Magazine, Kristian Regal.

Thanks to all the vendors for contributing your talents, your craft and your positive vibes.

Thanks to Amy for such a fantastic idea. Let’s do this again some time.

And if you are planning a wedding of your own, there are a lot of great choices in Utah and the vendors that contributed to this party would be a good place to start.

Blushing – A Bridal Event

by justin on February 25, 2011

in Events,Weddings

I can’t wait to tell you about Blushing, but first let me tell you this. I just got back from Las Vegas. Did you know Rita Rudner is still alive? She’s got her own show in Vegas. I, on the other hand, was there for WPPI, which is an enormous trade show and convention. 15,000 wedding and portrait photographers gather each year to listen to other photographers give business advice and talk about how to make better photographs. Then, all 15,000 of us gather together in a circle, hold hands, and sing Kumbaya. I love going because I get to see lots of photographer friends that I only see once a year, meet some new ones, and I even learn a thing or two.

So that’s where I was this last week. Now I’m back and we’re hard at work putting together a very cool party for the recently engaged. It’s called Blushing. If you are getting hitched, well then, hang on to your hat. Blushing, March 9, 2011, is going to be a swanky party where recently engaged girls can come and have great food and listen to very cool music. There will be some fantastic  giveaways and a swag-bag loaded with goodies. We’ll have a number of wedding professionals on hand so you’ll have a chance to talk to them and ask questions in a no-pressure, friendly environment. Basically, it’s a night of fun and low-key wedding planning.

We are so excited for the vendors that will be there, making this a night you’re not going to want to miss (if you’re engaged).

WedSmith – Utah wedding industry

In September, Hillary from Alta Moda (who is awesome) gathered a big group of wedding professionals at the Grand America in Salt Lake. If you are a wedding photographer in Utah, florist, musician, coordinator, or anyone involved in the wedding industry and didn’t get a chance to go, it’s really a crying shame because this event was packed with useful information about how to run a better business. But word on the street is that it is going to happen again next year, and when it does, you won’t want to miss it. Thanks so much for having me, Hillary. I loved being there.

Brett and Maren got married on October 2nd in Bountiful, Utah. It was one of the most lovely fall days I can remember.

I’ve known Brett since 3rd grade. We were both in Mrs. McCulloch’s class. We both played football together in Jr. High. Yes, I played football. What’s so funny about that? And then, friends in high school, college, and later years.

So now, a wedding. Love and bliss, kissing, dancing, and all that. What a great honor it was to be the photographer at one of my great friend’s happy day.

Utah Wedding Photography – Spring City

by justin on September 25, 2010

in Weddings

Morgan and Mathew got married in Spring City, Utah. So then the next thing you might be asking is, Where the heck is Spring City? Easy answer: It’s on the way to Manti.

The next question you might be asking is, was there any square dancing? And as a matter of fact, there was. After their ceremony in a church that’s older than nearly any building in Utah, the wedding party headed to a boys ranch/artist’s retreat for a lovely meal catered by Vanity Fare.

And then you might be asking, well that sounds fun and all, but was there any shot-gun shooting? And that’s exactly what happened next. After all the allemandes and the promenades and what have you, we all walked to a nearby field and wedding guests took turns blasting the crap out of clay pigeons. I, for one, suggest we add after-wedding shotgun shooting to the annuls of wedding traditions.

And now, meet Morgan and Mathew.

Salt Lake City wedding – Jared + Jessica

by justin on August 25, 2010

in Weddings

Jessica and Jared got married in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Point just above the campus of the University of Utah. They’ve known each other since high school (he was in love with her/she had a different boyfriend), but they didn’t start getting all lovey-dovey until a few years after that.

But get this: One day Jessica’s mom asked what Jared’s last name was. Jessica said it was Bybee. Jessica’s mom was a little bit in shock. See, a few years earlier, Jared’s father, a brain surgeon, saved Jessica’s dad’s life when he was rushed to the hospital with some trouble with his brain. Now, their kids are married.

Meet Jessica and Jared.

Engagement pictures for Lovebirds

Rebecca and Jason are getting married in April. I’ll be there to photograph the happy day.

Jason had the grand idea of taking engagement pictures at the same place where he proposed. They told me all about how he had flowers ready and had the ring placed just so in her favorite book. She knew something was up. Still, a perfect evening. It all took place at The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem, Utah.

Snow storm the day of their engagement pictures. Snow. Storm. But that didn’t stop us from taking pictures outside, too. So here they are: Rebecca and Jason. Just two crazy kids in love.

Utah Wedding Photography – Park City

in Weddings

On the night before Jeannie and Julian got married, they gathered with friends and family at their favorite restaurant in Park City, Utah. Since they live in Park City, they know all the best places and chose to celebrate at 350 Main.

After dinner, Jeannie’s father told everyone about Jeannie and Julian’s first date. The date didn’t go so well. But their second date was a hit. And on that night, they made an apple pie together. And so, on the night before the wedding, and to celebrate love and first dates and second dates, apple pie was served to all the guests for dessert.

One of the finest places in Utah to have a wedding is Log Haven. That’s where Tom and Katie decided to get hitched in June. For me, one of the highlights was during the ceremony, Tom’s grandfather recited a poem by Pablo Neruda. Tears all around.

Daughter: I don’t know.
Mother: You’re going to babysit.
Daughter: Babysit? Why?

Provo Engagement Pictures

in Engagements

If you ask me, their story is hot. They met on a house boat at Lake Powell. So there you go. Summertime. Swim suits. 100 degrees. Leisure time. No wonder they’re in love. That’s very cool. I mean, hot.

Salt Lake City Wedding – Rachel and Micah

by justin on January 7, 2009

in Weddings

Here were my two favorite things about Rachel and Micah’s wedding day in Salt Lake City. I loved the speeches from her parents, and I loved hearing Micah play the violin, accompanied by Rachel. My other two favorite things were hearing Hannah sing and watching their slideshow. Rachel and Micah are so classy and refined and I’m really happy to have been there.

Christmas is over

Christmas is over

Christmas is over and I had a great holiday. There was a ham, some presents, laughing, rides on the ATVs, naps, getting out the old family photographs, singing, and telling stories about when we were teeny. No wassle. I don’t know why we didn’t have Wassle. But we’re back home now and it’s back to work. I have two weddings to photograph this week, plus we’re doing another bridal show on Saturday. Busy, busy. Just the way I like it.

Salt Lake Bridal Portrait

Rachel is like her mother–charming and composed. In fact, the whole family is like that. I photographed her sister’s wedding a couple years ago and I’m thrilled to be shooting for this family again. And after being with them, you always walk away with a smile.

Rachel was photographed at her house in Salt Lake City. She was a real champ too, standing out there in the cold the whole time. Here’s the support team. Thanks Arial!

Provo Bridal Portraits – Lisa

Their wedding is almost here!

They met like this: Her dad started a motorcycle shop. He hired some guy to run the place. I think that guy knew Greg. Then Lisa was at the shop or something. There was also something about kissing. Listen, the story was complicated. What it comes down to, really, is that in February, Lisa and Greg are to be wed.

Here’s a one minute slideshow with a few more of their engagement pictures.
