I’m so excited to have Whitney and Richard’s gorgeous wedding featured on The Knotty Bride. I love Alison’s blog because she’s funny and a great writer in addition to being a great photo editor. Those are three great skills that not every wedding blogger possesses. Three cheers for the Knotty Bride, and three cheers for Whitney for having such great taste in wedding details. Her wedding was both fun and beautiful. Looking at these pictures makes me want summer to be here, now.

In other news, the 30 Strangers project begins on Friday. Holy smokes I’m excited for that. I can’t wait to get going on it. I’ve been meeting with one of the coolest people I’ve ever met, a mister Stephen Martin, who is helping me with the P.R. for this year’s exhibit (currently planned for September). Our plan is to create a bigger event than in previous years so we can raise even more money for the Center for Women and Children in Crisis than we have in previous years. Good things are cooking up.

Rexburg Wedding

by justin on June 19, 2010

in Rexburg,Weddings

Today one of my favorite people on planet earth will get married. Miss Ashley Shaum. Ashley spent a few months as an intern in my office last year. While in Provo, she met Alden. A few months after they met, he moved to Hawaii for school and she went along with him. Not long after that, he proposed to her on the beach. In Hawaii. At sunrise. Now that’s romantic.

And today, in Rexburg, Idaho, her hometown (mine too!) they’ll be wed. And I get to photograph the big event. I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time.

Planning a big day of your own? We should talk.

Ashley and Kent got married at the Salt Lake temple. One of the warmest days in February I can think of. A beautiful day. Their luncheon took place at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building where family members told embarrassing and sweet stories about the bride and groom. Mostly embarrassing though. Later that night, friends and family gathered for a wedding celebration at Noah’s in Sandy. It was, on all accounts, a lovely affair.

Rachel came from Colorado to be photographed with her mother, grandmother, and daughter. That’s cool, but here’s the even cooler part. It was a surprise to her mother–her arrival, the portrait session–the whole thing. I love that.

….

Side-story:  Rachel had a little girl with her that, at one point, wasn’t all that happy. So she did what any two-year old would do to let us know she wanted a little attention. She cried some. I asked Rachel if it would be ok to give her a sucker. Sure. So I asked our adept intern if she’d go get it. A few minutes later the kids were chewing gum but no one was eating a sucker.

Me: Did you find that sucker?
Ashley: I couldn”t find it.
Me: Really? It should be right on my side of the desk.
Ashley: Umm…. I ate the sucker.

Well, it was a Blow-pop. Can you blame her?

Justin Hackworth photographs lovely weddings and happy people. Why do you keep putting off your family pictures? Don’t wait much longer. Before you know it, those little kiddies of yours will be off to college in New York or Seattle and by that time, they’ll be too heavy to sit on your lap. Let’s talk. Now’s the time for family pictures.

Me: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Her: A dentist.
Me: Why do you want to be a dentist?
Her: Because when I tell people “it’s your turn” they will come right then.

Sarah is an illustrator. Do yourself a favor and check out her work here. I LOVE what she does and was so glad to meet her. Thanks for coming, Sarah.

Our 30 Strangers project is well under way and I love the way it’s going so far. But what to do about all those people that still wanted to participate after the 30 spots were filled? Well, we came up with a great plan and a super deal. If you want to know what it is, email me and I’ll tell you all about it. That’s what Beth did.

Engagement pictures – Lizy and Nick

by justin on March 20, 2009

in Engagements

For Lizy and Nick’s engagement pictures, we drove out on the North side of Utah Lake. They were real champs and didn’t balk at the idea of walking out in a teeny bit of mud, even though they both had new shoes. And let me just say, their shoes were fabulous. So here they are: Lizy and Nick. Beautiful.

Christmas is over

by justin on December 30, 2008

in Holidays,Weddings

Christmas is over

Christmas is over and I had a great holiday. There was a ham, some presents, laughing, rides on the ATVs, naps, getting out the old family photographs, singing, and telling stories about when we were teeny. No wassle. I don’t know why we didn’t have Wassle. But we’re back home now and it’s back to work. I have two weddings to photograph this week, plus we’re doing another bridal show on Saturday. Busy, busy. Just the way I like it.

Party Follow-up

by justin on December 8, 2008

in business,Provo

First of all, thanks so much for everyone that came to the party on Friday. Throughout the night, we had about 100 people come see our space and say hello.

And I just can’t say enough good about the band that played: The Gatsbys. Thanks fella’s. You really spiced things up. I kept hoping they’d play this song and they did! Sweet.

And speaking of sweet, we had the most delicious cup cakes I’ve ever had, provided by Megan at the Sweet Tooth Fairy. I ate three. I’ll admit that now. Three cup cakes, snort snort. They were amazing.

We handed out raffle tickets and at a few times throughout the night we called out some winning numbers. (I actually used a megaphone, like I was a high school principal or something. You’ve got to get one). The winners were awarded gift certificates and products from the following places. Note: These are some of our favorite people in town and we love them and the businesses they run. They have our highest recommendations. We weren’t giving away stuff from just anyone.

Kaliedoscope Boutique
Shep Salon
Pizzeria 712
The Smokehouse
Metropolitan Salon
The Flower Basket
Mode Boutique
Applebees (just kidding about this one)

It’s so fun to have a party like that and see our good friends and make some new ones. I had a great time and really feel fortunate and blessed to know so many talented and interesting people. I love what I do for a living and it’s a good feeling to be able to share that with others. Thanks, friends, for coming to our little celebration. And now, some pictures.

Portait of Jonathan Canlas

by justin on November 19, 2008

in Photographers,portraits

I knew when I woke up yesterday that it would be another great day. Turns out, I was right.

Jon Canlas is a pretty big deal. He’s sponsored by Fuji, he publishes his weddings in all the finest wedding publications, and he photographs weddings all over the world. And the amazing thing, is that he’s only 16 years old. Just kidding. He’s older than that.

Yesterday he came to my office and we had a great time talking about why we shoot weddings and what moves us to be photographers. He told me about his process and I told him about mine. (One thing that’s becoming increasing unique about Jon’s route is that he shoots all film). And we talked about the photographers we admire both in the wedding industry and in the commercial world.

I’ve admired Jon’s work for some time now, so it made me so happy to be able to spend a couple hours talking about the craft with someone I respect. Thanks, Jon. I want to have more days like that.

Wedding in Sandy, UT – Karen + Aaron

by justin on September 18, 2008

in Weddings

Would you like to laugh, have a good time, and feel like everything’s going to be just right? Then hang around Karen and Aaron for a while. And I think you’ll get a sense of that when you check out their wedding pictures. As I’ve been going through the editing process, I couldn’t help but smile. Karen is laughing and having a good time in nearly every picture I took of her. Listen, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love my job.

Salt Lake Wedding – Janet and Stephen

by justin on July 16, 2008

in Weddings

Janet and Steven got married at the Hidden Valley Country Club. I arrived early and we got in golf carts and drove to some secluded places and took pictures of the two of them before the guests arrived. I loved driving the golf carts. We even saw a deer. I took that as a good omen of good things to come.

You can see a short slide show here.

If you want wedding photographs like these for yourself or someone you love, give me a call.
