Backyard wedding in Orem

by justin on October 6, 2011

in Weddings

Kelsi and Christian got married in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple and had a beautiful reception at a friend’s house in Orem. It rained a little that day and the weather could have take a turn for the worst later that night. Instead, just about an hour before the guests would arrive, those stormy clouds shuffled on by and and decided to go somewhere else, leaving Kelsi and Christian a perfect night for celebrating with family and friends the start of their new life together.

Meet Kelsi and Christian.

Wedding in Temecula California

by justin on October 3, 2011

in Weddings

Ashley and Anthony got married in Temecula this summer. Makes sense. That’s where they’re both from and where their friends and family live. And let’s be honest, why wouldn’t you get married there. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

They started the wedding celebration the night before at Ashley’s father’s house. Close friends and family gathered, ate dinner, and made a few toasts. No one fell in the pool, so that part of the night wasn’t at all similar to what happens in the movies. But Ashley told me that many blissful late nights have been spent with friends in that pool, and from what she told me, it sounds like that part is exactly like what happens in the movies.

Wow, all I can say is you have a gift! You have a special talent to capture every important and beautiful moment through that lens of yours.  I was blown away with your sweet charm that won everyone over at our wedding.  Everyone in our wedding party loved you and felt very special because you gave everyone their own little photo shoot and quality time.  We felt like you were part of the family and you are welcome back anytime! You are the best and we feel so lucky that you flew out to Southern California to make our day so special! You truly captured so much candidness and made our photos look purely organic and authentic. We love them so much and cannot THANK  YOU enough for your amazingness!!!!

Salt Lake Wedding Photography

by justin on August 16, 2011

in Weddings

The wedding took place in Salt Lake City. The Draper Temple to be exact. It’s not hard to see that Kiersten and Jordan are in love, and on their wedding day, they just couldn’t have looked any happier.

After the wedding, they had a reception for family and friends at The Dock of the Bay restaurant at Deer Creek Reservoir. Then, they left in a boat. I’ll say that again. They left in a boat. Ahhhh, now that’s romantic.

Their wedding took place in Manti, Utah on a day in April that could have been mistaken for December. But just about the time we were going to take group pictures out front, what do you know, the sun came out and the snow stopped. But just for a bit. Then the snow started again. But just for a bit. Kind of crazy.

How to plan a wedding

Last week we gathered the finest wedding professionals this side of the Mississippi and put on a fancy party for recently engaged girls. We called it Blushing and it turned out to be a smashing success.

The idea (all Amy’s) was sort of an anti-bridal fair. We wanted to create something that was, above all, swanky and fun, where girls that are planning a wedding could come relax, have a good time, eat good food, hear good music, and talk to the best wedding vendors around.

So that’s just what we did and everyone had a great time and we were so pleased with how things played out. The next morning one girl sent an email that said, “I just wanted to thank you again for the event last night, I was basically on cloud nine to say the least, it was a great event that got all my creative juices pumping!!! I look forward to getting to know you in the future!”

Another girl wrote and said, “I wanted to say thank you for putting on such a WONDERFUL event. The evening was beautiful. Honestly, it is the best bridal event I have attended thus far. Blushing was very classy and you catered to what a bride really needs. The bridal events I have attended in the past have been very loud and overwhelming, but Blushing was perfect. It was calm, great music, personable vendors that you could tell really wanted to get to know you. I just wanted to let you know that you did a fantastic job of creating such a lovely event. It was a real treat to attend.” That’s just the sort of response we were hoping for.

Of course Amy and I can’t take all the credit. This was a team effort that just would not have happened without Mood Events who took our idea and made it 100 times better. Not only did Matt, Garrett and Alfreda think of every detail to make certain this was a night we’d all remember, but they are so easy and pleasant to work with. I want to do another party like this, just so I can hang out with them some more. I give them my highest recommendation.

We had live music from the very smooth, very talented Nik Day and the food (oh my, deep breath) the food was provided by The Catering Company. It was so fancy, I didn’t even know what any of it was. (When it comes to food, I’m a bit of a dilettante). There was something with goat cheese, though. I know that. And I ginger-mint drink that made me want someone to hook me up to an IV with that stuff.

Honestly, the party wouldn’t have been as fun or worthwhile without the rest of the vendors. Here’s the list of those that were involved:

Featuring:
Alta Moda Bridal – Wowed everyone with a sample gown
The Catering Company – Still dreaming about their food
Dippidee – Served wedding cake at he end of the night
The Flower Basket Botique – Provided all the flowers and they were gorgeous
Velour Live Music Gallery – A perfect location for our party
Seraph Stationery – Made the letterpress invitations the girls received.
Mood Events and Production – Genius.
Nik Day Music – The secret ingredient to any party
Versa Artistry – Provided girls with a lip bar, kissy, kissy
John Beesley Goldsmith – Gave every bride pearl earings
Justin Hackworth Photography – That’s me!

Garrett, Alfreda, Matt from Mood Events with Amy and I.

Not only did the girls walk away with a gift bag their roomates were sure to covet, but we had give-aways throughout the night with very cool prizes from each vendor.

Amy and I had such a great time that night and we went home that night feeling so good about it.

Thanks to all the girls that came. It was wonderful to meet you.

Thanks to Utah Bride and Groom, Utah Bride Blog, Southern Weddings Magazine, Kristian Regal.

Thanks to all the vendors for contributing your talents, your craft and your positive vibes.

Thanks to Amy for such a fantastic idea. Let’s do this again some time.

And if you are planning a wedding of your own, there are a lot of great choices in Utah and the vendors that contributed to this party would be a good place to start.

The best wedding photography of 2010

by justin on January 14, 2011

in Weddings

When I look back at all the weddings I photographed in 2010 it’s hard to select the best images. More accurately, I’d say this selection is a handful (ok, two handfuls) that represent a variety of emotions, scenes, personalities, details, and traditions. My goal was to create a collection of images that evoke a feeling of love and celebration.

My other goal is that you will call me to photograph your wedding and hopefully you’re getting married in Italy. My passport is current. Just saying.

Do you have a favorite here?

Salt Lake City wedding – Jared + Jessica

Jessica and Jared got married in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Point just above the campus of the University of Utah. They’ve known each other since high school (he was in love with her/she had a different boyfriend), but they didn’t start getting all lovey-dovey until a few years after that.

But get this: One day Jessica’s mom asked what Jared’s last name was. Jessica said it was Bybee. Jessica’s mom was a little bit in shock. See, a few years earlier, Jared’s father, a brain surgeon, saved Jessica’s dad’s life when he was rushed to the hospital with some trouble with his brain. Now, their kids are married.

Here’s a wedding I had been looking forward to for a long time. Because I love the couple and because I love to go to Idaho and because I love to photograph weddings. Ashley and Alden are living in Hawaii right now, but came to Rexburg (her hometown) to get married.

You never know what the weather will do in Idaho, in June, (anytime, really) and on the day of the wedding, the weather was purrrrrrfect. A few days before that, cold and rainy. On the wedding day: glorious. A sign of good things to come, if you ask me.

Side note: Now, when you look at these pictures, you might find yourself saying, where on earth did she get that fabulous dress? Paris? New York? Did she make a pact with the devil to get a dress so stunning? Nice guesses, but nope. She got it at Alta Moda in Salt Lake. And if you are getting married, you’ll never stop thanking me for telling you about Alta Moda, if you go there, too.

Today one of my favorite people on planet earth will get married. Miss Ashley Shaum. Ashley spent a few months as an intern in my office last year. While in Provo, she met Alden. A few months after they met, he moved to Hawaii for school and she went along with him. Not long after that, he proposed to her on the beach. In Hawaii. At sunrise. Now that’s romantic.

Then, lunch at Hamiltons. That place is great. I’d go back there in a heartbeat.

Yesterday Amy and I spent some time going through all of the weddings and portrait sessions I’ve done over the last year. The purpose is to get some new display prints in my office. Freshen things up a bit. Springtime. Newness. All of that, see. And it was so great to go back and see some of my favorite wedding and portrait pictures from the last few months. And it was fun to discover some new favorites that I just hadn’t seen the first time around.

Back when I shot film, I loved busting out the contact sheets from the previous years and seeing if there was an undiscovered gem that I hadn’t found before. Like a little treasure hunt. You go back with fresh eyes, and maybe the emotion you felt when taking the pictures has faded a little, so you’re looking at the images with a new perspective.

One of my favorite photographers, Gary Winnogrand, used to wait a full year before he developed his film for this very reason. He would shoot the film and set it aside for one year before he even developed it! I could never do that. I’m too impatient. But for him, looking at them too soon clouded his ability to select the strongest images based on the image itself, not on how he felt at the time he made the picture.

So for me, what I’ve discovered, is that some of the pictures I respond to initially are the same pictures I respond to a year later. And yet, there are some surprises when you find a really great picture that you really didn’t notice the first time around. And I like that feeling. Like when you find a 20 dollar bill in some pants you haven’t worn in a month.

So, if you care to spend five minutes, this slideshow is a portfolio of my images from the past year that I find compelling. (There might be a handful that fall outside that one year range). Enjoy.

How to photograph a photographer

Do you want to know who I love? Angelica Glass. She’s a wedding photographer in New York. I met her last year in Vegas at WPPI. A Photographer’s Style

by justin on January 6, 2010

in Learn

Young photographers are often pressured into an emphasis on individual style, a search for distinction, a quest for newness and differentness. Yet the truth of the matter is that a unique style is a by-product of visual exploration, not its goal. Personal vision only comes from not aiming for it. In dim light, objects emerge from the gloom when not looking at them. It is the same with style; paradoxically, it is a natural, inevitable result of emphasizing subject, not self.

Who said you need to get married in Utah in order for me to photograph your wedding? I never said it and if someone did, they were misinformed.

Now, take for example, this couple. They’re getting married in Idaho, shortly, and I’ll be there to photograph the event. Can’t wait. I love to photograph weddings.

Back in May I went to Rexburg for their engagement pictures and last week we drove to Saltair for her bridal pictures. And we included the groom. Sort of like engagement pictures again, but with fancier clothes, a bouquet, and more horse flies. Yes, there were horse flies and let me tell you, those suckers bite.

Our 30 Strangers project is well under way and I love the way it’s going so far. But what to do about all those people that still wanted to participate after the 30 spots were filled? Well, we came up with a great plan and a super deal. If you want to know what it is, email me and I’ll tell you all about it. That’s what Leah did. And I was so glad she did, too, because a while ago I found her great blog and since then, I’ve been wanting to meet her. I love it when stuff like that happens. Thanks for coming in, Leah.

Engagement pictures – Lizy and Nick

by justin on March 20, 2009

in Engagements

For Lizy and Nick’s engagement pictures, we drove out on the North side of Utah Lake. They were real champs and didn’t balk at the idea of walking out in a teeny bit of mud, even though they both had new shoes. And let me just say, their shoes were fabulous. So here they are: Lizy and Nick. Beautiful.

What luck. Justin Lyon is in town to for the Sundance Film Festilval and had a couple photo shoots just down the block from my office. So he stopped by to say hello. Justin seems like the happiest person I know. I can’t imagine that he’s ever frowned or been sad.

Justin and his lovely wife Amelia are wedding photographers in Southern California and making a big splash in their neck of the woods. Everyone loves Amelia and Justin. Cheers, Justin. Thanks for coming by. You’re welcome here any time.

It was a beautiful and small wedding. Sixteen people total. That includes the bride and groom, the guests, and the little boy carrying the ring. Eighteen people in all if you count the bishop and the photographer. By the way, the last picture shown in this post may be my favorite group shot I’ve ever taken at a wedding.

The event took place in Salt Lake City at Heritage Gardens.

Here’s a slideshow of more of their wedding pictures.

Salt Lake City Wedding – Rachel and Micah

by justin on January 7, 2009

in Weddings

Here were my two favorite things about Rachel and Micah’s wedding day in Salt Lake City. I loved the speeches from her parents, and I loved hearing Micah play the violin, accompanied by Rachel. My other two favorite things were hearing Hannah sing and watching their slideshow. Rachel and Micah are so classy and refined and I’m really happy to have been there.
